ew Year’s resolutions tend to be about improving oneself in some way. Each of us probably has a shortlist of things we would like to be: fitter, thinner, healthier, more successful, wiser, more attractive… Nobody’s perfect, and it takes a lot of effort to achieve the goals we set ourselves. Sometimes our bodies just don’t want to cooperate and we need to call in the help of experts, but how far would you go to be the person you want to be rather than the person you currently are? Some people are determined to meet their health and fitness goals and put in long hours at the gym, some ‘invest’ in beauty procedures from products and therapies to surgery, some engage stylists to update their look, many study late into the night whilst holding down a day job. These are all examples of things that most of us would engage in, to varying degrees, to meet our goals. But would you have a grin lift? Cinderella surgery? Thigh gap therapy or opt for ‘vacation breasts’? Like fashion, plastic surgery trends come and go so I thought I’d find out some of the latest for 2015 and discovered there’s a whole new world of things to worry about out there… or not! First up is ‘Cinderella surgery’. This is foot reshaping surgery to make it possible to squeeze into the stilettos you love. It will save you from the dread of having to wear lower or flat shoes out at night. Next is the ‘grin lift’. This involves removing the extra skin above each corner of the mouth causing it to lift. It alleviates ‘bitchy resting face’. The ‘internal bra’ involves inserting silicon cups underneath the breast tissue and anchoring them to the bones of the rib cage with titanium screws. As the name infers this means you no longer have the hassle of having to wear a bra. Less invasive is ‘vacation breasts’. Dr Norman Row, a plastic surgeon in NYC is developing a spin-off of his famous 24-hour breast enlargement procedure. Using a liquid injectable, Rowe will pump up patients’ breasts, a temporary boost that will last two to three weeks; he anticipates debuting the procedure in 2016. Then there’re procedures such as eyebrow and eyelash transplants, bellybutton surgery, buttock implants and earlobe reconstructing…. Whatever your goals of self-improvement are this year, in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Make the most of yourself... for that is all there is of you.”

odel Chris Ashton has one of those faces that you instantly warm to; he has a certain panache that can be captured on film. So much so that when he appeared on one of the first reality TV shows 18 years ago someone advised him to get an agent. He did – Portfolio Model Agency – and since then you've no doubt seen him in shoots for various products from clothes and electronics to beer, sportsgear and real estate – not just in New Zealand but for a variety of countries including Germany, France, Korea, Fiji and the US. Chris has lived in Christchurch for the last 21 years after being raised in Dunedin and enjoying an extended OE. I caught up with Chris to find out what life's like as a professional model…

fairly average conditions too, but I love that as part of the challenge. What is one of the most unusual assignments you've had? A promotional video for a Korean Company. I had to act as a golf course designer, that's not so bad, but the aubergine coloured midriff cardigan and frilly white shirt (think that Seinfeld episode) I had to wear was hilarious. Who is your favourite fashion icon? Can I have more than one? Ralph Lauren, Ben Sherman (Arthur Benjamin Sugarman), Heidi Klum, The Beatles, David Byrne, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz.

You have been modelling for almost two decades, what are the aspects you love most about the industry? You meet an incredibly diverse bunch of people from interesting backgrounds. You go to some amazing locations and you have the opportunity to get right outside your comfort zone. What training did you have to undertake to become a model? It requires life skills, more than anything. I have a diverse background which helps. Being punctual, polite, listening to what the client wants and adding your own personality is all essential; as is learning about the product and the company you are representing and being confident. However, for any aspiring models, I highly recommend a Portfolio Modelling Workshop. What was your first modelling experience like? Great! The week after I signed up with Portfolio I landed a TV Commercial promoting the new Northlands Mall for Christmas. I spent half the time in a spa with Ange Stone…can't be all bad! What type of modelling jobs do you enjoy most? The outdoor ones are my favourites. Especially my jaunt to Fiji but you can also be working in

How do you keep in shape? I've been a member of Les Mills for over 20 years and try to get along there two or three times a week. I was a touch and basketball provincial rep. I love skiing, mountain biking and running around playing and swimming with the kids. Is modelling a full time career for you? Ahh that would be 'no'. It's very much a part-time gig. I have a full-time job and just fit the modeling/acting/promo roles in to my leave or work weekends.

What type of roles have you enjoyed over the years? My career has mostly been in the service industry from banking to sales, mortgage broking to management in the hospitality and fitness industries. What are you currently doing? For the past three and a half years I have been assisting people to rebuild their homes and their lives. Discussing the process and resolving complex claims. In between, I had a role in Special Projects and if you'd like to know more, check it out: 'The Cantabrian' at: www.cantabrianhome.co.nz. What has the feedback been like about the Cantabrian Home? Brilliant! After running the design competition and having the Prime Minister present the winner, we thought; let's build this, so people have something tangible to get ideas, inspiration and confidence from. I have met over 4000 people who have come

through the concept home. The feedback from everyone including The Minister for Earthquake Recovery has been phenomenal. I am very lucky to have been involved with such a great bunch of people who supported me brilliantly throughout. What music are you loving at present? Black Keys, Big Data, Preachers, Salmonella Dub, Black Seeds, Pretty much any Kiwi music. Give me a beat and I'm a happy man. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Sometimes not getting what you want can be a stroke of luck. Don't worry so much. And get a haircut.

What is your proudest achievement? ClichĂŠ as it sounds I am a very proud Dad to Molly (9) and Charlie (7). I have two of the most wonderful little people I could hope for. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I was a gravedigger. Very interesting, especially when you dig a plot in the wrong spot. What is your favourite drink? A cold beer, a rich shiraz or a smooth Central Otago pinot noir overlooking Lake Wanaka. What are you like at parties? Generally the first one dancing (unless my sister is there).

Off the Track, the long established business that specialises in both new and pre-loved curtains, drapes and blinds, made a surprising find recently when they were having renovations done. Found at the back of the chimney in the one hundred year old bungalow was a Mother's Day card with the accompanying photo and the words: “A loving wish on Mother's Day That's meant for you alone – May this one be the happiest That you have ever known!” Off the Track was the brainchild of current manager Kate Blair's parents - Rab and Annabel Blair and they have remained in the same spot at 106 Westminster Street (near the corner of Cranford St) for 23 years. Legendary Divas “Quiet please, there's a lady on stage….” Edith Piaf, Shirley Bassey, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield with a bit of Madonna thrown in for good measure - these and other stunning singing stars come alive in Christchurch performer Ali Harper's new show “Legendary Divas”. It's a project the talented performer has been inspired to write over the past couple of months since she began appearing overseas as a guest entertainer on cruise ships and while in America late last year. Harper was invited to perform at the renowned New York City United Solo festival in late 2014. She took the one woman play “Bombshells” (in association with The Court Theatre), to the Big Apple for which she received the festival's “Best Actress” award. “That just blew me away,” she says. “It was such an honour to be invited and perform in New York alongside 130 other one person shows from all over the world; the award was the icing on the cake.” While in the US, Ali Harper went on a search for Doris Day, one of her “heroes”. “I've wanted to meet her for so long. I know where she lives, where her Hotel Cypress Inn is. She is 90 now so I respect her privacy, but I would have loved to have knocked on her door and tell her how much I adore her. The signed

photograph she sent me last year and the selfies I took outside her front gate will just have to satisfy me for now.” she says. Doris will be amongst the legendary divas Ali will perform in her new show. “These women are not only incredible performers, they all have an interesting and often very sad story to tell too. That's something I incorporate into “Legendary Divas”. It's a way to honour these women, up close and personal.” Musical director Richard Marrett returns to work with Ali Harper and her eight-piece band, which includes Michael Story, Tim Sellars, Maddy Addis, Gwyn Reynolds, Cameron Pearce and Scott Taitoko. 2014 Heritage Awards

Knox Church was the fitting location for the 2014 Vero Canterbury Heritage Awards. The Awards recognise excellence in heritage retention and conservation, heritage tourism and heritage education within the public and private sector. Christ’s College Board of Governors won the Vero Supreme Award with their restored Harper and Julius Houses. Judges praised the Board of Governors for recognising the importance of restoring the iconic building within the School’s quadrangle both to the culture of the School and the heritage of Christchurch and Canterbury.

The Big Band Era Lazy Sundays

Haydn Rawstron:

NZ's eighth Chevalier of Arts

Busy with preparations for his Lansdown Summer Opera Festival near Tai Tapu, former artists-manager Haydn Rawstron recently received a major honour from France for his contribution to that country's culture.

THE CHEVALIER HONOUR, PRIMARILY CONFERRED ON FRENCH NATIONALS, IS ALSO GIVEN TO PERSONS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO FRENCH CULTURE.

hortly before Christmas Haydn received a letter from the French Minister of Culture informing him that he had been made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Order of Arts and Letters. The honour will soon be formally presented to Haydn with its accompanying medal, by the Ambassador of France to New Zealand. Haydn worked for more than a generation with the great opera houses and orchestras of the world and, in France with all of its major opera houses and orchestras. "The traditional mode of managing the careers of international musical artists is via a network of interconnected top impresarios spanning the globe, each sharing part of each artist's career,” says Haydn. “I had a vision of exclusive, worldwide artistmanagement for a limited number of artists, whereby I would deal directly with an opera house or orchestra wherever it may be, rather than selling my artists through a network of local artist-managers. “This required constant travelling in order to become known personally to most of the great opera houses and orchestras throughout the world.

Lansdown Summer Opera Festival Haydn also has other things on his mind, chiefly Opera at Lansdown. The annual summer festival will be held for the second year at his country home, Lansdown House, behind the Rossendale winery, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road, from February 5 to March 8. This year's festival will feature three Mozart operas, each presented in a new format which Haydn has invented and called “narropera” (narrated opera): Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and The Clemency of Titus. and Letters German singer Dorothee Jansen, first tried out this new chamber-music format for presenting opera. Each performance contains eight to 10 arias of one particular opera, generally from a range of characters. Dorothee will be singing a total of 27 arias from three Mozart operas in this year's festival programme, with violinist Jan van den Berg providing a contrasting solo line, while Haydn adds piano accompaniment and, between the arias, narrates the story of the opera in its 18th century context. Narropera transports one into the poetic world of the composer and the librettist. The new format appeals equally to the opera fan and the opera first-timer. Its ultimate aim is to entertain and clarify this most complex of art forms. The magnificent Great Room of Lansdown House with seating for 100 transports one back to 18th century architectural proportions. The three-acre garden/arborium of Lansdown, a national heritage treasure, transports one into arcadia where, in the tradition of Glyndebourne Opera Festival in England, patrons may bring a picnic to enjoy before or after the interval-less 80 minute performances. The exotic tree garden, planted in 1859, four years before the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, is a story in itself. In the 19th century, it was sometimes referred to as The Garden of Canterbury. Its wide range of now gigantic trees includes specimens of Japanese pine, macrocarpa, ginkgo, Judas tree, Douglas fir, swamp cypress, native black beech, copper beech, silver birch, a score of towering oaks and a breath-taking cedar of Lebanon. hese are no ordinary tours; they are trips of a lifetime. The Marlborough based tour company takes its visitors on genuine, grass roots experiences across the South Island. Owners, Geoff and Lee Swift, started out over 20 years ago showing people the virtually untouched Marlborough high country, particularly the vast (now mostly Department of Conservation owned) Molesworth Station. This 180,787 hectare expanse of high country is about the size of Stewart Island and is an area of challenging weather and terrain, diverse landscape, and the home to dedicated farmers and conservationists as well as many ghosts of settlers gone by. For many years after moving to Marlborough from Canterbury, Molesworth was purely a place name on a signpost on the side of State Highway One. We would pass it every time we

Marlborough Daisy at Lake Tennyson travelled to and from Christchurch. I had absolutely no idea of how vast the area was and of its significance in the shaping of New Zealand's economy and its prominent place in the history books.

Molesworth and the Marlborough high country is one of our country's most precious and stunning natural destinations. The first sheep to be brought to the South Island were driven to and through its valleys, rivers and across the mountains. The Molesworth Station itself is NZ's larges t ever farm. Back to my tour; all praise has to go to our driver/guide, who despite a few too many facts, names and dates for me to remember, was so informed and well-rehearsed that there wasn't a death, birth, family feud or bit of Maori history that went unmentioned. We hadn't even reached the Molesworth Station, on my two day adventure, and I had seen places of historical interest and learned so much more about the region's wine. We saw Marlborough vineyards and learned about the t aste differences of the grapes grown in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. I found out how the region's landscape had changed so dramatically in 1855 when Marlborough fell victim to an 8.3 magnitude earthquake. The land lifted so much that one of the rivers ended up with nowhere to go it is now called the Blind River.

I tried to envisage how the early British settlers could imagine this land making the perfect pasture and habitat for sheep for them and future generations. In the words of Weld “such a beautiful landscape strewn with native tussocks and grasses with flat land for cropping and hill country for sheep. We shall prosper in this land of plenty for generations to come”. Travelling with the Molesworth Tour Company, be it through the Molesworth Station or anywhere else in the South Island, you will be enthralled, intrigued and captivated by the stories, facts and history. It seems that every inch of land has a tale to tell as you listen to your guide. I have to admit, our overnighter in Hanmer Springs (after we headed out of the Molesworth on day one) was a good time to soak in all the new knowledge I had acquired - as well as literally soak, relax and pamper myself in the famous hot pools and enjoy an exceptional dining experience incorporating fresh local produce and fine local wine.

Two roomed cob cottage The next day, refreshed and ready for more discovery, tales of overcoming challenges, of love and heartache and of prosperity, we headed back into the Molesworth and then into the Rainbow Station. A slight detour took us to Lake Tennyson (the source of the Clarence River and named after the beloved British poet). We stopped there and had what I can only describe as the most delicious morning tea with the view of all views. After that unforgettable experience it was a magical journey back to Blenheim and hardly another car, bike to be seen along the way until we reached State Highway 63.

Knox Church reopens Earthquake-damaged Knox Church, which officially reopens on Sunday, February 1, with a parish service and an organ concert, is remarkable for its successful combination of the latest in building technology with its historic characteristics.

he 1902 church was able to be saved thanks to its independent post structure which supported a lightweight iron roof. This mostly intact, arched timber interior structure was retained and is now complemented by a striking new exterior that features copper panels and interesting new windows. Rebuild project manager Ron Keating says that working on the successful reconstruction of the church is the highlight of his career. “I think the congregation had a great vision in taking on the rebuild. In terms of satisfaction, I have never seen a project run so smoothly, with a lot of co-operation from everyone involved,” he says. He is ebullient with praise for them all, including Alun Wilkie, of Wilkie and Bruce Architects, who designed the new building; David Elliott, technical director of Aurecon, the international engineering firm; and Marshal Day, who perfected the acoustics. “The rebuild structure meets 100 per cent of the new building code. It has a potential life span of several hundred years. In fact, it is so structurally robust that it could still be here in 500 years. That's perfectly feasible,” says Ron. Story continues over page

Knox Church reopens So far costing $5.5 million for the reconstruction, the parish fund-raisers are at present about $600,000 short of their needs. Most of the money has come through fund-raising, a significant grant from the Knox Trust and other bequests and donations. “But we're still looking for help,” says Ron. After the February 2011 earthquake, which did most of the damage, the Knox Church parish committee decided to reconstruct the heritage building as a multi-purpose unit, not only fo r worship but also for community activities, including concerts and other performances. The 2014 Vero Canterbury Heritage Awards Ceremony was held there last October and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra launched its 2015 programme there – commenting on the outstanding acoustic system. Three weddings are already booked for February. Ron delights in showing people around the church, which is directly adjoined to the still-intact Knox Centre in Bealey Avenue. “The c hurch features the latest improvements in combatting seismic damage. There are 14 prestressed concrete columns which contain hightension cables. The columns are anchored at the bottom so that they can sway back and forth. They weigh from nine to 15 tonnes and replace the brick buttresses that supported the old triple-brick walls,” says Ron. The original wooden roof structure, flooring and wooden wall panels were all recovered from the damaged church and are back in pla ce again. The wooden floor is now based on a heavy-duty concrete-slab foundation, which also supports the roof and old internal wooden columns. A hundred circular vents in the floor provide air conditioning. The walls are made of pre-cast concrete panels with heavy-duty interior jibbing, but basically it looks the same. Seating capacity is 412, consisting of the original central pews, with more seating to be provided on the sides. New features include the glass vestibules j ust inside the main entrance, from Victoria Street, plus a new entrance from Bealey Avenue. Although basically the same size, the inside of the church gives the impression of being bigger, due mainly to being better lit through doubleglazed windows, which replace the original smaller coloured leadlight windows.

INAUGURAL ORGAN CONCERT Another major feature is the 110-year-old organ, which has been refurbished and rebuilt by the South Island Organ Company, of Timaru, at a cost of $500,000, entailing more than 11,000 man hours of work. Apart from the console now being movable on a purpose-built platform, and a new trumpet stop, the organ looks and sounds much the same as it did when first installed in February 1904. However, it now boasts more responsive, electrified action and modern pla ying aids. City organist Martin Setchell will present the inaugural concert, of light, entertaining classical music, at 2pm on Sunday, February 1. Appropriately, the programme will include some music chosen for the 1904 inaugural concert, such as Lemare's famous “Andantino” (better known as “Moonlight and Roses”). Concert admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

“For this collection I was fascinated by Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s ‘wrapping’ works, where they wrap historical monuments, rows of trees and even whole stretches of coastline in fabric.” This consideration of materials, manipulation and movement is conveyed most clearly in elegantly draped, gathered or bias-cut gowns and dresses skilfully formed from swathes of silk. A second work of art referenced in Liam SS14 is Phillip K. Smith's ‘Lucid Stead’, created from a 70 year-old wooden shack in Joshua Tree National Park, overlaid with mirrors and LED lighting. “The mirrors transpose the desert onto the shack and in turn the shack reflects the desert back at itself,” says Emily. “I’ve emulated this with a soft silk crepe fabric set with little pieces of mirror that catch the light, cut in a classic column dress, a sweet simple tank, a shirt and a really great pantsuit.” Interchange beautifully showcases not only Emily’s ability to bring sophisticated ideas to fruition but her understanding of luxurious fabrics and her love of special details, which are imbued in every piece.

Designer labels You know the pangs of jealousy you get when you see celebrities and their seemingly unlimited wardrobes, the outfits that never seem to be worn more than once? While us regular folk may be a little more practical than wearing our clothing just once, we finally have access to an ever rotating wardrobe and with it, high quality designer wear for a fraction of the price.

estled comfortably in the historic retail development, The Tannery, Recycle Boutique is exactly what the name suggests – a boutique recycled shopping store. But what the name doesn't allude to is that Recycle Boutique is packed with gorgeous, high quality designer clothing without the designer price tags. “We have a lot of regulars who come in every week,” owner Hayley Budd explains. “With about 100 new items in our store every day, you can come in regularly and there will always be something new. Better yet, if you sell through us, your wardrobe is always rotating.” While living in Wellington, Hayley had been a regular at her local branch of the nationwide franchise. When she moved to Christchurch after the earthquake to be closer to family, she realised there was nowhere to sell her preloved clothing. “It was the perfect opportunity to start something new here,” Hayley says. “The city was changing, there was a lot of new energy h ere and after the earthquakes people became conscious about not holding onto the old anymore.”

It was a gamble. A city known as conservative in nature, Christchurch isn't a traditional op-shopping city and Hayley had no idea how it would go. “We couldn't have hoped for a better start,” she says. “We've had a fantastic year.” The opportunity to get designer items for a small fraction of their retail price resonated with the city and Recycle Boutique has taken off in a big way. Wheth er it's university students wanting to keep up with the latest trends, parents under pressure to keep their teens in the latest gear, or parents themselves wanting to stay stylish. Even labelled menswear, which Hayley says is difficult to get, is a hit and they are on the lookout for more male suppliers. “If you're wanting to step out in Karen Walker or Stolen Girlfriends Club, some of these items can cost half a pay check. We get great condition labelled clothing for a fraction of the price.” Carrie had been frequenting the Tannery for her daily coffee and waited eagerly for the Recycle Boutique to open. “For decades I have only bought second hand clothing for personal, ethical reasons,” she says.

Learning diﬃculties linked to vision Does your child or a child you know have learning difficulties? Have you had their eyes tested? Vision is now believed to be the missing link in learning/reading/writing disorders and dyslexia.

n 1996, Geraint Griffiths, the UK founder of the Association of Sportvision and Schoolvision Practitioners, made this link between how visual/binocular instabilities affect learning in school children. His findings came from research he and his colleagues did in assessing the connection between vision and sporting performance. They then went on to make the connection between visual instabilities and learning/dyslexia in children. It is now understood that the dominant eye's role is critical in achieving fluent reading and comprehension. The methodologies and techniques of assessing how a child sees provide the fundamental missing link in the role vision plays in the learning process. The assessment required to detect this goes beyond conventional optometry and prescribing spectacles to just 'see better'. In school children, a specialist Anstice Schoolvision assessment can uncover binocular instabilities that contribute towards dysfunctional learning and dyslexia in its many forms. Once identified, the best treatment can

then be formulated. On the surface, a child with learning difficulties may appear to see well; however, the visual system could be functioning on over-drive to achieve this. An over-worked visual system can cause learning fatigue, comprehension difficulties and slow or stagnant reading behaviour. Without a specialist visual assessment, it will be difficult for the child or parent to know if their vision is preventing them from learning well. This can be tricky because: Ÿ You need to find a wedding photographer whose style agrees with your taste Ÿ You need a wedding photographer whose body of work is up to your standards; and Ÿ You need a wedding photographer whose personality clicks with both of you. This last trait is quite possibly the most important of the three, although you don't want to sacrifice any of them if you can help it, in choosing a wedding photographer. Why? Because it is the wedding photographer's job to set everyone, and you especially, at ease so that the wedding pictures you get reflect the people you love and not a caricature of them. And this is best achieved by using a wedding photographer that you feel at ease with. True, there is no guarantee that everyone will feel at ease with the wedding photographer that you choose which is why it is so important for you to choose one that at least you will be comfortable with. Before we move on, however, be aware that some of the bigger photography studios have a small number of representatives for you to meet with and sell you their wedding photography packages. The problem is that once your wedding party is booked they will give the assignment to

someone else, even a freelance wedding photographer that you have never met before. Protect yourself by either using an individual wedding photographer, or a wedding photography company that will guarantee the particular individual that will photograph your wedding. Likewise, be sure when choosing your wedding photographer that you see several entire wedding's worth of wedding photography that he (or she) personally shot. Anyone can shoot hundreds of pictures and have a few that have turned out great, especially in particularly photogenic situations like weddings tend to be.

It takes a real skilled individual though to turn out an entire wedding's worth of great wedding photography. Finally, regardless of how sharp and how much of a people person the wedding photographer is there is no way that they are going to know who your great uncle Charlie is, or where to look for him if he disappears. So save your wedding photographer (and yourself) time and grief by choosing someone within your wedding party (someone with a strong personality) who knows everyone involved, to be the wedding photographer's contact person.

For food to be completely gluten and allergy free, it needs to be manufactured in exclusively gluten-free premises, which ensures there is no possibility of contamination. 45 ml Tequila 15 ml Triple Sec 30 ml Sugar syrup 15 ml lime juice 4 large strawberries Methodology 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Add all the ingredients to a blender and add a scoop of ice 3. Blend till slushy 4. Pour the mixture into the prepared glassware and garnish with a fresh strawberry. Note: Don't add too much ice, there's nothing worse than a watery margarita. For an extra twist add 15 ml of cherry liqueur it partners fabulously with strawberries and raspberries.

Best Lite Miso Salmon with Asian Style Slaw & Toasted Sesame Serves 4 4 x 180g portions of fresh salmon (you could use thick white fish if you prefer) 4 Tbsp miso soup paste ½ C Best Foods™ Lite Mayonnaise 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest ¾ C panko breadcrumbs Salad ½ red cabbage, finely sliced 1 carrot, peeled and finely sliced 1 yellow capsicum, deseeded and sliced into strips ½ C sango sprouts 1 C mesclun salad mix 2 Tbsp coriander and extra for garnish Dressing ¼ C Best Foods Lite Mayonnaise 1 lime, juice and zest 1 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2-3 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (you can use a mixture of black and natural seeds)

Method Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. Line a shallow roasting tray with cooking paper. In a small bowl combine miso, mayonnaise and lemon zest. Arrange salmon portions in the tray and spread a generous layer of miso mayonnaise on each. Sprinkle over panko crumbs. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes depending on thickness of the salmon (the flesh should just start to flake in the centre when tested with a fork). Rest for 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile combine the sliced vegetables and sprouts in a large bowl and toss with the lime mayonnaise dressing. While many of us were lounging round the pool during the summer holidays, two of Lincoln's locals filled the festive season with activities of a more unusual kind. And, although it seems Lincoln University student Morgan Shields got the short end of the stick when the Department of Ecology was handing out summer scholar assignments, he assures us collecting weta droppings was an “awesome” experience.

Morgan – an undergraduate Entomology student – is carrying out research into the role of insects such as dung beetles, tree weta and ants in seed dispersal. He is marking native dung beetles with fluorescent dye to observe their dispersal behaviour in the lab and their natural environment. Using an ultraviolet lamp, he can observe the marked beetle's walkabouts at night and the fluorescent trail they leave behind. He wants to find out how far they travel to find dung, whether it contains native seeds, and if so, which plant species. He is also delving into how much dung they can recycle and how deep they bury it. “It's exciting being on the forefront of current research,” Morgan explains. “Field work means going to remote or very neat locations and seeing and doing some pretty awesome things such as climbing mountains in the search for weevils, determining giant weta populations on a predator free island, or hanging out in the

In a clump I would plant some that bloom early, some that bloom late, some for the beauty of their autumn foliage, some for the colour of their bark and others for the fruit. Certain shrubs are good to use for hedge purposes. A hedge is prettier, usually, than a fence. Landscape gardening may follow along very formal lines or along informal lines. The first would have straight paths, straight rows in stiff beds, everything, as the name tells, perfectly formal. The other method is, of course, the exact opposite. There are danger points in each. The formal arrangement is likely to look too stiff; the informal, too fussy, too wiggly. As far as paths go, keep this in mind, that a path should always lead somewhere. Its job is to direct one to a definite place. Now, straight, even paths are not unpleasing if the effect is to be a formal garden. The danger in the curved path is an abrupt curve, a whirligig effect. It is far better for you to stick to straight paths unless you can make a really beautiful curve.

He got cracking and it was goodbye lawn, hello concrete and brick paving, and a new six foot high fence. A lush 30sq m private, sheltered outdoor room was born. Then the magic began. A tiny waterfall water feature, brushwood fencing, and about two dozen lush and lovely pungas and ferns of varying heights and varieties and voila – the couple had a secluded 'West Coast' haven. Two shade cloth sails give protection from rain, sun, and frost (the pungas love them). Add candles, quirky ceramics, flickering lights among the greenery, and a selection of cute little critters known as “God's little creatures” and you have the perfect place for a champagne breakfast, leisurely lunch, afternoon drinkies or a late night barbecue. Outdoor lighting and a

gas heater take care of chilly evenings. The West Coast was such a success that this clever couple decided to “encroach on the lawn even more”. With an opening in the brushwood fence, a new wall and a new boundary fence, a second similar sized room was created. Even more sheltered, this area has a more summery feel. Maurice has made clever, built in against-the-wall seating, (with blue lights that flicker underneath) and a seriously useful table. White camellias and buxus hedging give a Mediterranean feel and an eclectic (and frequently changing) selection of candles and ornaments, funky cushions, a hanging seat, and shade umbrella add to the ambience. Thanks to clever design and an enviable amount of creativity, al fresco entertaining is almost always a possibility at this abode!

Profound though this may be, when it comes to home decorating, it's about as helpful as it is effective.

hen it comes to your home and how you decorate it, it's all about personality and the great news is, personality doesn't cost a fortune to demonstrate. On the other hand, getting it wrong can be costly, which is where the professionals come in because, let's face it, a few nuggets of professional wisdom can work wonders. Before contacting your professional interior designer or decorator, get an idea of the project's scope. Are you doing the whole house, or just one room? What's your budget? What are your timeframes? The first step to finding the right professional for you is through word of mouth. Talk to family and friends about their experiences, especially when the resulting look is similar to what you're after. However, a great interior designer will want to put their clients' needs, budget and the style of home into consideration, so never judge them on one job alone. Some designers 'specialise' in a particular look or style while a good designer will want to clue in to your style, even if you don't quite know how to express it.

A web search can bring up a list of local designers, enabling you to read up on their online profiles, even better is when you can view their previous projects and testimonials. When you've narrowed down your list, there're some more questions you need to be ticking off. Is the designer formally trained? Although formal qualifications aren't a sure fire promise of quality, they are certainly a mark of the dedication they have invested into their career. Are they part of a p rofessional body and do they offer any relevant guarantees? Does their previous experience align with the project you have in mind? How many years' experience do they have behind them? An experienced designer should be able to supply referees you can contact. You also need to be able to clarify terms of engagement and fees. Changes to the Building Code helps consumers The recently passed Building (Residential Consumer Rights and Remedies) Regulations 2014 will provide consumers with access to more effective dispute resolution services.

New supercar a stunner Ford has stunned everyone at the recent Detroit Autoshow with the unveiling of a new GT Supercar.

hile the GT bears some resemblance to the Ferrari's ballistic LaFerrari, such as the doors, taillight cluster and countless ducts and scoops, the design mostly seems to exude blue collar muscle, a clear throw back to the previous GT and the original Le Mans winning GT40. New 20inch alloys house four carbon ceramic brakes and a rear diffuser and adjustable rear wing complete the ensemble. The body itself will be made predominantly of carbon fibre with lashings of aluminium, housing both the engine and pushrod suspension. Ford also claim the new GT will have one of the best power to weight ratios of any production car.

Expecting V8 grunt? Not this time. A mid-mounted 3.5-litre twinturbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine is rumoured to produce in excess of 430kW. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will provide the get up and go. No word yet on performance figures, though Ford themselves say the new GT will have more than enough poke while still providing new levels of efficiency. Inside, the two-seat GT offers what Ford calls a "purposeful" interior, which can be accessed via the scissor like doors. The previous GT began production back in 2004 and the new car will be produced in limited numbers from late next year, marking the 50th anniversary of Ford's infamous 1-2-3 finish with the original GT40 at Le Mans in 1966. While the new car will be sold globally, the chance of seeing one next to the new Mustang in NZ Ford showrooms in the future is pretty slim.

Old school V8 thunder T

he Torana SLR 5000 was not only one of Holden's mightiest V8 pocket rockets, but was also driven by the late great Peter Brock to his second Bathurst victory in 1975. This 1974 Canterbury owned example has Bathurst kudos of its own, for it was one of 30 to be paraded around the mountain as part of its launch in 1974.

Whereas the first hot Torana before it, the LC and LJ XU1, was a compact coupe with relatively clean lines, the LH SL/R 5000 features a square jawed, no-nonsense face with flares and big bumpers. A large rear spoiler with SL/R insignia dominates the boot lid while twin exhaust pipes poke out from underneath. Inside, the dashboard, instrument cluster and switches are all factory fresh, with the gargantuan three spoke steering wheel immediately grabbing your attention. The interior trim in this SL/R has been professionally reupholstered in leather with SL/R 5000 badges embossed in the front seats. Under the bonnet sits Holden's tough as nails 308ci small block V8 mated to a four speed manual box. While you could also have your Torana with a variety of inline sixes, the 5.0-litre 308 V8 179kW - was the only option for the SL/R 5000, hence the model designation. Turn key and in an instant, eight lazy cylinders rumble into life. Put your foot to the floor and what happens next is an all-out assault on your senses. You hear the V8 thunder building and feel the vibrations of power and torque pinning you back in the seat. Drop it down from fourth to third and any motorway lane hogger can be dealt with. Being a product of seventies non power assisted machinery, you work up more of a sweat working the wheel than an hour in the gym. Drum brakes all round mean you have to book your stop well in advance of pressing the pedal.

volocity, sponsored by Orion, featured standing sprints (drags) and lap sprints for electric go karts, motor bikes and cars. It also pitted electric vehicles versus combustion vehicles. It even featured a two lap race for modified electric bikes. And, fifteen high school teams competed in a number of challenges, using vehicles they had built during the year. Rob McEwen, organiser of EVolocity, says that the event has got the electric vehicle community buzzing, and that it has also had an impact on die hard petrol heads. “I got a call following the event from a Christchurch Ferrari club member who said they were not only blown away with the performance of the Tesla S against the Ferrari, but that they'd taken an opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf at the event and couldn't believe its acceleration off the mark,” says McEwen. EVolocity had three primary goals: Ÿ Stimulate innovation in the electric vehicle sector in NZ Ÿ Demonstrate the performance capabilities of electric vehicles Ÿ Encourage young people to pursue studies in science, technology and engineering McEwen says that a number of those who competed are already talking about innovations to improve their performance next year. And, in the case of one of the high school teams, they're talking about building a real electric drag car next year, sourcing mentorship from John Wayland, owner of White Zombie, the fastest electric drag car in the world. “That's exactly the sort of outcome we were looking for,” says McEwen.
