ew Year’s resolutions tend to be about improving oneself in some way. Each of us probably has a shortlist of things we would like to be: fitter, thinner, healthier, more successful, wiser, more attractive… Nobody’s perfect, and it takes a lot of effort to achieve the goals we set ourselves. Sometimes our bodies just don’t want to cooperate and we need to call in the help of experts, but how far would you go to be the person you want to be rather than the person you currently are? Some people are determined to meet their health and fitness goals and put in long hours at the gym, some ‘invest’ in beauty procedures from products and therapies to surgery, some engage stylists to update their look, many study late into the night whilst holding down a day job. These are all examples of things that most of us would engage in, to varying degrees, to meet our goals. But would you have a grin lift? Cinderella surgery? Thigh gap therapy or opt for ‘vacation breasts’? Like fashion, plastic surgery trends come and go so I thought I’d find out some of the latest for 2015 and discovered there’s a whole new world of things to worry about out there… or not! First up is ‘Cinderella surgery’. This is foot reshaping surgery to make it possible to squeeze into the stilettos you love. It will save you from the dread of having to wear lower or flat shoes out at night. Next is the ‘grin lift’. This involves removing the extra skin above each corner of the mouth causing it to lift. It alleviates ‘bitchy resting face’. The ‘internal bra’ involves inserting silicon cups underneath the breast tissue and anchoring them to the bones of the rib cage with titanium screws. As the name infers this means you no longer have the hassle of having to wear a bra. Less invasive is ‘vacation breasts’. Dr Norman Row, a plastic surgeon in NYC is developing a spin-off of his famous 24-hour breast enlargement procedure. Using a liquid injectable, Rowe will pump up patients’ breasts, a temporary boost that will last two to three weeks; he anticipates debuting the procedure in 2016. Then there’re procedures such as eyebrow and eyelash transplants, bellybutton surgery, buttock implants and earlobe reconstructing…. Whatever your goals of self-improvement are this year, in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Make the most of yourself... for that is all there is of you.”

Chris Ashton M

odel Chris Ashton has one of those faces that you instantly warm to; he has a certain panache that can be captured on film. So much so that when he appeared on one of the first reality TV shows 18 years ago someone advised him to get an agent. He did – Portfolio Model Agency – and since then you've no doubt seen him in shoots for various products from clothes and electronics to beer, sportsgear and real estate – not just in New Zealand but for a variety of countries including Germany, France, Korea, Fiji and the US. Chris has lived in Christchurch for the last 21 years after being raised in Dunedin and enjoying an extended OE. I caught up with Chris to find out what life's like as a professional model…

fairly average conditions too, but I love that as part of the challenge. What is one of the most unusual assignments you've had? A promotional video for a Korean Company. I had to act as a golf course designer, that's not so bad, but the aubergine coloured midriff cardigan and frilly white shirt (think that Seinfeld episode) I had to wear was hilarious. Who is your favourite fashion icon? Can I have more than one? Ralph Lauren, Ben Sherman (Arthur Benjamin Sugarman), Heidi Klum, The Beatles, David Byrne, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz.

You have been modelling for almost two decades, what are the aspects you love most about the industry? You meet an incredibly diverse bunch of people from interesting backgrounds. You go to some amazing locations and you have the opportunity to get right outside your comfort zone. What training did you have to undertake to become a model? It requires life skills, more than anything. I have a diverse background which helps. Being punctual, polite, listening to what the client wants and adding your own personality is all essential; as is learning about the product and the company you are representing and being confident. However, for any aspiring models, I highly recommend a Portfolio Modelling Workshop. What was your first modelling experience like? Great! The week after I signed up with Portfolio I landed a TV Commercial promoting the new Northlands Mall for Christmas. I spent half the time in a spa with Ange Stone…can't be all bad! What type of modelling jobs do you enjoy most? The outdoor ones are my favourites. Especially my jaunt to Fiji but you can also be working in

6 January 29, 2015 Metropol

How do you keep in shape? I've been a member of Les Mills for over 20 years and try to get along there two or three times a week. I was a touch and basketball provincial rep. I love skiing, mountain biking and running around playing and swimming with the kids. Is modelling a full time career for you? Ahh that would be 'no'. It's very much a part-time gig. I have a full-time job and just fit the modeling/acting/promo roles in to my leave or work weekends.

FIVE MINUTES

What type of roles have you enjoyed over the years? My career has mostly been in the service industry from banking to sales, mortgage broking to management in the hospitality and fitness industries. What are you currently doing? For the past three and a half years I have been assisting people to rebuild their homes and their lives. Discussing the process and resolving complex claims. In between, I had a role in Special Projects and if you'd like to know more, check it out: 'The Cantabrian' at: www.cantabrianhome.co.nz. What has the feedback been like about the Cantabrian Home? Brilliant! After running the design competition and having the Prime Minister present the winner, we thought; let's build this, so people have something tangible to get ideas, inspiration and confidence from. I have met over 4000 people who have come

through the concept home. The feedback from everyone including The Minister for Earthquake Recovery has been phenomenal. I am very lucky to have been involved with such a great bunch of people who supported me brilliantly throughout. What music are you loving at present? Black Keys, Big Data, Preachers, Salmonella Dub, Black Seeds, Pretty much any Kiwi music. Give me a beat and I'm a happy man. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Sometimes not getting what you want can be a stroke of luck. Don't worry so much. And get a haircut.

What is your proudest achievement? ClichĂŠ as it sounds I am a very proud Dad to Molly (9) and Charlie (7). I have two of the most wonderful little people I could hope for. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I was a gravedigger. Very interesting, especially when you dig a plot in the wrong spot. What is your favourite drink? A cold beer, a rich shiraz or a smooth Central Otago pinot noir overlooking Lake Wanaka. What are you like at parties? Generally the first one dancing (unless my sister is there).

Off the Track, the long established business that specialises in both new and pre-loved curtains, drapes and blinds, made a surprising find recently when they were having renovations done. Found at the back of the chimney in the one hundred year old bungalow was a Mother's Day card with the accompanying photo and the words: “A loving wish on Mother's Day That's meant for you alone – May this one be the happiest That you have ever known!” Off the Track was the brainchild of current manager Kate Blair's parents - Rab and Annabel Blair and they have remained in the same spot at 106 Westminster Street (near the corner of Cranford St) for 23 years. Legendary Divas “Quiet please, there's a lady on stage….” Edith Piaf, Shirley Bassey, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield with a bit of Madonna thrown in for good measure - these and other stunning singing stars come alive in Christchurch performer Ali Harper's new show “Legendary Divas”. It's a project the talented performer has been inspired to write over the past couple of months since she began appearing overseas as a guest entertainer on cruise ships and while in America late last year. Harper was invited to perform at the renowned New York City United Solo festival in late 2014. She took the one woman play “Bombshells” (in association with The Court Theatre), to the Big Apple for which she received the festival's “Best Actress” award. “That just blew me away,” she says. “It was such an honour to be invited and perform in New York alongside 130 other one person shows from all over the world; the award was the icing on the cake.” While in the US, Ali Harper went on a search for Doris Day, one of her “heroes”. “I've wanted to meet her for so long. I know where she lives, where her Hotel Cypress Inn is. She is 90 now so I respect her privacy, but I would have loved to have knocked on her door and tell her how much I adore her. The signed

photograph she sent me last year and the selfies I took outside her front gate will just have to satisfy me for now.” she says. Doris will be amongst the legendary divas Ali will perform in her new show. “These women are not only incredible performers, they all have an interesting and often very sad story to tell too. That's something I incorporate into “Legendary Divas”. It's a way to honour these women, up close and personal.” Musical director Richard Marrett returns to work with Ali Harper and her eight-piece band, which includes Michael Story, Tim Sellars, Maddy Addis, Gwyn Reynolds, Cameron Pearce and Scott Taitoko. Legendary Divas plays at The Court Theatre, Addington, on Sunday, 1March at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Bookings phone 0800 333 100.

Haydn Rawstron:

NZ's eighth Chevalier of Arts

Busy with preparations for his Lansdown Summer Opera Festival near Tai Tapu, former artists-manager Haydn Rawstron recently received a major honour from France for his contribution to that country's culture.

S

THE CHEVALIER HONOUR, PRIMARILY CONFERRED ON FRENCH NATIONALS, IS ALSO GIVEN TO PERSONS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO FRENCH CULTURE.

hortly before Christmas Haydn received a letter from the French Minister of Culture informing him that he had been made a Chevalier (Knight) of the Order of Arts and Letters. The honour will soon be formally presented to Haydn with its accompanying medal, by the Ambassador of France to New Zealand. Haydn worked for more than a generation with the great opera houses and orchestras of the world and, in France with all of its major opera houses and orchestras. "The traditional mode of managing the careers of international musical artists is via a network of interconnected top impresarios spanning the globe, each sharing part of each artist's career,” says Haydn. “I had a vision of exclusive, worldwide artistmanagement for a limited number of artists, whereby I would deal directly with an opera house or orchestra wherever it may be, rather than selling my artists through a network of local artist-managers. “This required constant travelling in order to become known personally to most of the great opera houses and orchestras throughout the world.

14 January 29, 2015 Metropol

“Eventually, I came to concentrate on the top opera houses and orchestras of Europe, where I negotiated rich pickings for my clients – opera singers, conductors, and stage directors. “I worked closely with my artists, knew their strengths, guided their development especially with regard to repertoire and, frankly, would sell them in the repertoire for which I felt them most suited, sometimes contrary to what my artists initially thought. "For this new hands-on, total management, I set up the first 'boutique-agency', in London, restricting myself to the management of 30 artists. Gradually, I won over administrators of the big cultural institutions to my vision and, in France, administrators took to it with a passion." The Chevalier honour, primarily conferred on French nationals, is also given to persons from

Lansdown House other countries who have contributed significantly to French culture. Haydn becomes New Zealand's eighth Chevalier of Arts and Letters. Other non-French Chevaliers include many house-hold names such as Rudolf Nureyev, Dirk Bogarde, Marlene Dietrich, George Clooney, Jude Law, Kylie Minogue, Andre Rieu, Carla Bruni, and Philip Glass. Lansdown Summer Opera Festival Haydn also has other things on his mind, chiefly Opera at Lansdown. The annual summer festival will be held for the second year at his country home, Lansdown House, behind the Rossendale winery, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road, from February 5 to March 8. This year's festival will feature three Mozart operas, each presented in a new format which Haydn has invented and called “narropera” (narrated opera): Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and The Clemency of Titus. In 2012, Haydn and his wife, famous

OUT & ABOUT

and Letters German singer Dorothee Jansen, first tried out this new chamber-music format for presenting opera. Each performance contains eight to 10 arias of one particular opera, generally from a range of characters. Dorothee will be singing a total of 27 arias from three Mozart operas in this year's festival programme, with violinist Jan van den Berg providing a contrasting solo line, while Haydn adds piano accompaniment and, between the arias, narrates the story of the opera in its 18th century context. Narropera transports one into the poetic world of the composer and the librettist. The new format appeals equally to the opera fan and the opera first-timer. Its ultimate aim is to entertain and clarify this most complex of art forms. The magnificent Great Room of Lansdown House with seating for 100 transports one back to 18th century architectural proportions. The three-acre garden/arborium of Lansdown, a national heritage treasure, transports one into arcadia where, in the tradition of Glyndebourne Opera Festival in England, patrons may bring a picnic to enjoy before or after the interval-less 80 minute performances. The exotic tree garden, planted in 1859, four years before the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, is a story in itself. In the 19th century, it was sometimes referred to as The Garden of Canterbury. Its wide range of now gigantic trees includes specimens of Japanese pine, macrocarpa, ginkgo, Judas tree, Douglas fir, swamp cypress, native black beech, copper beech, silver birch, a score of towering oaks and a breath-taking cedar of Lebanon. For bookings for the festival go to the Court Theatre Website www.courttheatre.org.nz, or phone 963 0870.

THE EXOTIC TREE GARDEN, PLANTED IN 1859, FOUR YEARS BEFORE THE CHRISTCHURCH BOTANIC GARDENS, IS A STORY IN ITSELF. IN THE 19TH CENTURY, IT WAS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE GARDEN OF CANTERBURY.

Beautiful & Back to the future dangerous Akarua has just launched their icon Pinot Noir - The Siren 2013. Packaged in a stunning gift box, each bottle is individually numbered to reflect the limited production of this wine. In Greek mythology, the Sirens were dangerous and beautiful creatures, portrayed as femmes fatales who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck them on the rocky coast of their island. “With this wine, The Siren, we wanted to pay tribute to our founder and owner, Sir Clifford Skeggs, whose original businesses were all inspired by his love of the sea. It was this maritime-based success in the deep south of New Zealand that enabled him to venture into the world of wine,” Matt Connell, Akarua's award winning winemaker said. The Siren is a blend from “exceptional barrels of wine crafted from ultra-premium blocks of pinot noir” grown on Akarua estate in Bannockburn, Central Otago. RRP: $100 per bottle.

PIE in the sky The words “gourmet” and “service station” don't normally go together, but here's a little something to challenge your preconceptions! Bestselling cookbook author and food writer, Chelsea Winter, has created a limited edition, Gourmet Moroccan Lamb pie exclusively for Z Energy. But don't wait too long, as Chelsea Winter's Moroccan Lamb Pie will be available at selected Z stations only until 22 February.

This coming March, a 16th century building in Rome will be reborn as G-Rough,

a ten-suite ''rough luxe'' hotel located just a stone's throw from the Piazza Navona. This latest venture, from the team who brought you PalazzinaG in Venice, has drawn inspiration from the country's rich history and design prowess. Entrepreneur and owner Gabriele Salini and his business partner Emanuele Garosci masterfully blended the two together resulting in an unconventional ''Made in Italy'' concept of luxury. Each floor of the five-story hotel draws its inspiration from a different Italian designer from the '30s, '40s, and '50s, including Giò Ponti, Ico Parisi, Silvio Cavatorta, Paolo Venini, Guglielmo Ulrich, Osvaldo Borsani and Archimede Seguso. Each

Fitness gear for 2015 Wired reports: The consumer market is currently under siege by an arsenal of fitness trackers, smart accessories, and wearable computers intent on helping you whip your body into peak physical condition. Truth is, you're every bit as capable at shedding pounds armed with a veggie-stocked fridge, a pair of trainers, and a jump rope as you are with a fancy heart-rate-tracking smartwatch and a pair of $300 shoes packed with sensors. But even if you keep it mostly old-school, adding a couple of digital investments to your regimen can help. They'll show you where you're making gains even when it doesn't feel like you are, and they'll help you stay motivated enough to resist the constant gravitational pull of pizza and Netflix. These are some new tools for 2015 that will help ensure your health and fitness success in the coming year… A 'smart' scale If you have $180 or so to buy only one thing, get a connected scale. Recent research has found that weighing in at least once a week is key to keeping hard-earned pounds from creeping back. If you spend a little more to invest in a scale that wirelessly transmits your weigh-ins to your smartphone, that's one less niggling task you've got to do each day. MyFitnessPal Tracking your daily food intake

is also a must, and MyFitnessPal makes it a snap. The free app runs on multiple mobile platforms and has several features that make it a powerful tool.

Some sort of fitness tracker You don't need to meticulously track every step, lap, or burpee to get fit. But having some degree of activity tracker, whether it be your phone or a wearable, offers three main benefits. First, it can monitor your intensity. If you don't have hours to spend running or lifting weights, you can make sure you're getting a quality, efficient workout. Second, by tracking your activities, you can build on what you've done in the past, and gain a sense of accomplishment. Third, many fitness trackers (or rather, their apps) offer some degree of community. If you need additional motivation, want to meet up with other people with similar goals as yourself, or if you have a competitive edge, digitally communing with others will help keep you on track. Experience the real South Island Molesworth Rainbow Boundary Gate looking north

Take a trip with the Molesworth Tour Company and feel like you have stepped back in time or into the pages of a coffee table book of landscape photography. Be immersed in the heart and soul of New Zealand's South Island as you are welcomed into the homes of locals and listen to your guide tell you stories of the early settlers who beat all odds to live, work and raise their families.

T

hese are no ordinary tours; they are trips of a lifetime. The Marlborough based tour company takes its visitors on genuine, grass roots experiences across the South Island. Owners, Geoff and Lee Swift, started out over 20 years ago showing people the virtually untouched Marlborough high country, particularly the vast (now mostly Department of Conservation owned) Molesworth Station. This 180,787 hectare expanse of high country is about the size of Stewart Island and is an area of challenging weather and terrain, diverse landscape, and the home to dedicated farmers and conservationists as well as many ghosts of settlers gone by. For many years after moving to Marlborough from Canterbury, Molesworth was purely a place name on a signpost on the side of State Highway One. We would pass it every time we

Marlborough Daisy at Lake Tennyson travelled to and from Christchurch. I had absolutely no idea of how vast the area was and of its significance in the shaping of New Zealand's economy and its prominent place in the history books.

MITCHELLMACKERSY CHRISTCHURCH

Molesworth and the Marlborough high country is one of our country's most precious and stunning natural destinations. The first sheep to be brought to the South Island were driven to and through its valleys, rivers and across the mountains. The Molesworth Station itself is NZ's larges t ever farm. Back to my tour; all praise has to go to our driver/guide, who despite a few too many facts, names and dates for me to remember, was so informed and well-rehearsed that there wasn't a death, birth, family feud or bit of Maori history that went unmentioned. We hadn't even reached the Molesworth Station, on my two day adventure, and I had seen places of historical interest and learned so much more about the region's wine. We saw Marlborough vineyards and learned about the t aste differences of the grapes grown in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. I found out how the region's landscape had changed so dramatically in 1855 when Marlborough fell victim to an 8.3 magnitude earthquake. The land lifted so much that one of the rivers ended up with nowhere to go it is now called the Blind River.

OUT & ABOUT

I tried to envisage how the early British settlers could imagine this land making the perfect pasture and habitat for sheep for them and future generations. In the words of Weld “such a beautiful landscape strewn with native tussocks and grasses with flat land for cropping and hill country for sheep. We shall prosper in this land of plenty for generations to come”. Travelling with the Molesworth Tour Company, be it through the Molesworth Station or anywhere else in the South Island, you will be enthralled, intrigued and captivated by the stories, facts and history. It seems that every inch of land has a tale to tell as you listen to your guide. I have to admit, our overnighter in Hanmer Springs (after we headed out of the Molesworth on day one) was a good time to soak in all the new knowledge I had acquired - as well as literally soak, relax and pamper myself in the famous hot pools and enjoy an exceptional dining experience incorporating fresh local produce and fine local wine.

Two roomed cob cottage The next day, refreshed and ready for more discovery, tales of overcoming challenges, of love and heartache and of prosperity, we headed back into the Molesworth and then into the Rainbow Station. A slight detour took us to Lake Tennyson (the source of the Clarence River and named after the beloved British poet). We stopped there and had what I can only describe as the most delicious morning tea with the view of all views. After that unforgettable experience it was a magical journey back to Blenheim and hardly another car, bike to be seen along the way until we reached State Highway 63.

WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFES NEW OPENINGS RETAIL STORES DOWNTOWN

Knox Church reopens Earthquake-damaged Knox Church, which officially reopens on Sunday, February 1, with a parish service and an organ concert, is remarkable for its successful combination of the latest in building technology with its historic characteristics.

By Hans Petrovic

T

he 1902 church was able to be saved thanks to its independent post structure which supported a lightweight iron roof. This mostly intact, arched timber interior structure was retained and is now complemented by a striking new exterior that features copper panels and interesting new windows. Rebuild project manager Ron Keating says that working on the successful reconstruction of the church is the highlight of his career. “I think the congregation had a great vision in taking on the rebuild. In terms of satisfaction, I have never seen a project run so smoothly, with a lot of co-operation from everyone involved,” he says. He is ebullient with praise for them all, including Alun Wilkie, of Wilkie and Bruce Architects, who designed the new building; David Elliott, technical director of Aurecon, the international engineering firm; and Marshal Day, who perfected the acoustics. “The rebuild structure meets 100 per cent of the new building code. It has a potential life span of several hundred years. In fact, it is so structurally robust that it could still be here in 500 years. That's perfectly feasible,” says Ron. Story continues over page

Knox Church reopens So far costing $5.5 million for the reconstruction, the parish fund-raisers are at present about $600,000 short of their needs. Most of the money has come through fund-raising, a significant grant from the Knox Trust and other bequests and donations. “But we're still looking for help,” says Ron. After the February 2011 earthquake, which did most of the damage, the Knox Church parish committee decided to reconstruct the heritage building as a multi-purpose unit, not only fo r worship but also for community activities, including concerts and other performances. The 2014 Vero Canterbury Heritage Awards Ceremony was held there last October and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra launched its 2015 programme there – commenting on the outstanding acoustic system. Three weddings are already booked for February. Ron delights in showing people around the church, which is directly adjoined to the still-intact Knox Centre in Bealey Avenue. “The c hurch features the latest improvements in combatting seismic damage. There are 14 prestressed concrete columns which contain hightension cables. The columns are anchored at the bottom so that they can sway back and forth. They weigh from nine to 15 tonnes and replace the brick buttresses that supported the old triple-brick walls,” says Ron. The original wooden roof structure, flooring and wooden wall panels were all recovered from the damaged church and are back in pla ce again. The wooden floor is now based on a heavy-duty concrete-slab foundation, which also supports the roof and old internal wooden columns. A hundred circular vents in the floor provide air conditioning. The walls are made of pre-cast concrete panels with heavy-duty interior jibbing, but basically it looks the same. Seating capacity is 412, consisting of the original central pews, with more seating to be provided on the sides. New features include the glass vestibules j ust inside the main entrance, from Victoria Street, plus a new entrance from Bealey Avenue. Although basically the same size, the inside of the church gives the impression of being bigger, due mainly to being better lit through doubleglazed windows, which replace the original smaller coloured leadlight windows.

Ron Keating

“THE REBUILD STRUCTURE MEETS 100 PER CENT OF THE NEW BUILDING CODE. IT HAS A POTENTIAL LIFE SPAN OF SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS. IN FACT, IT IS SO STRUCTURALLY ROBUST THAT IT’S FEASIBLE IT COULD STILL BE HERE IN 500 YEARS.”

INAUGURAL ORGAN CONCERT Another major feature is the 110-year-old organ, which has been refurbished and rebuilt by the South Island Organ Company, of Timaru, at a cost of $500,000, entailing more than 11,000 man hours of work. Apart from the console now being movable on a purpose-built platform, and a new trumpet stop, the organ looks and sounds much the same as it did when first installed in February 1904. However, it now boasts more responsive, electrified action and modern pla ying aids. City organist Martin Setchell will present the inaugural concert, of light, entertaining classical music, at 2pm on Sunday, February 1. Appropriately, the programme will include some music chosen for the 1904 inaugural concert, such as Lemare's famous “Andantino” (better known as “Moonlight and Roses”). Concert admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

Texture & movement The creative thinking of Liam designer Emily Miller-Sharma inspired a breath-taking collection for the coveted brand this season.

F

urther exploring Emily’s interest in architecture and the artistic altering of space and structure, Liam's collection Interchange translates the work of European duo Christo & Jeanne-Claude and Californian artist Phillip K. Smith into beautifully wearable gowns, suits and separates with a focus on texture and movement. “I’m interested in the way artists and architects consider space, and the altering of perception through materials,” says Emily.

INTERCHANGE BEAUTIFULLY SHOWCASES NOT ONLY EMILY’S ABILITY TO BRING SOPHISTICATED IDEAS TO FRUITION BUT HER UNDERSTANDING OF LUXURIOUS FABRICS AND HER LOVE OF SPECIAL DETAILS, WHICH ARE IMBUED IN EVERY PIECE.

“For this collection I was fascinated by Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s ‘wrapping’ works, where they wrap historical monuments, rows of trees and even whole stretches of coastline in fabric.” This consideration of materials, manipulation and movement is conveyed most clearly in elegantly draped, gathered or bias-cut gowns and dresses skilfully formed from swathes of silk. A second work of art referenced in Liam SS14 is Phillip K. Smith's ‘Lucid Stead’, created from a 70 year-old wooden shack in Joshua Tree National Park, overlaid with mirrors and LED lighting. “The mirrors transpose the desert onto the shack and in turn the shack reflects the desert back at itself,” says Emily. “I’ve emulated this with a soft silk crepe fabric set with little pieces of mirror that catch the light, cut in a classic column dress, a sweet simple tank, a shirt and a really great pantsuit.” Interchange beautifully showcases not only Emily’s ability to bring sophisticated ideas to fruition but her understanding of luxurious fabrics and her love of special details, which are imbued in every piece.

here's a very lovely looking best-kept secret in Christchurch based at The Tannery. But because the owners and operators are feeling in a generous mood, they're willing to let style lovers in on this little secret.

This secret goes by the name of Raw Nova and while it's been wooing its growing customer base for a year now, and is continuing to attract a loyal and dynamic following, it has, compellingly, retained its exclusivity – resisting the temptation to oversaturate the market with its name and wares. Raw Nova already ticks one very large box given its location at The Tannery – the store keeps company and is rubbing shoulders with a range of boutiques and restaurants in a league of their own. As Canterbury finds itself in the midst of a summer feeling generous with sunshine, and style lovers shop up a storm for the latest fashion, it's hard to believe, and easy to be in denial about the fact that weather with cooler tones will soon be upon us. Luckily, for those in denial about their wardrobes needing a pick-me-up, Raw Nova is already on the case and is expecting its Autumn/Winter 2015 shipments to begin dropping early February. The store's duo, Gail and Allie, have worked their style magic to bring in a range that will sate even the most discerning appetite for quality aesthetics and fabrics. Gail and Allie are really excited for the new AW15

“THERE WILL BE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE THIS SEASON. WE ARE SEEING A LOT OF SKIRTS AND DRESSES BELOW THE KNEE, OVERSIZED KNITS, TRENCH COATS, TAILORED SUITS AND BEAUTIFUL SHIRTS IN A STRONG COLOUR PALETTE OF WINTER WHITE, GREY MARL, BEIGE, NAVY AND OF COURSE BLACK.”

ranges to come into store and have already chosen pieces for their own wardrobes. Gai l and Allie's only real rule is that they stock what they love and would wear themselves. This includes the likes of C&M Camilla and Marc, Maurie & Eve, MLM and Shakuhachi from some of their international designers, and New Zealand designers such as Karen Walker, Stolen Girlfriends Club and the new label AIM that delivers elegance with a refined fresh look.

Maurie & Eve are delivering beautiful tailored suits with the classic white shirt to oversized knits and trench co ats, and MLM, which has become well recognised for its authentic take on modern and feminine dressing, draws inspiration from past and present style icons to create a collection that is modern, edgy and forever wearable. “We love MLM's stunning and simplistic take on ladylike dressing, integrated with your favorite model off duty looks. “There will be something for everyone this season. We are seeing a lot of skirts and dresses below the knee, oversized knits, trench coats, tailored suits and beautiful shirts in a strong colour palette of winter white, grey marl, beige, navy and of course black.” In addition to its precious threads, Raw Nova also stocks a range of exclusive prints and other homeware so you can recreate the Raw Nova aesthetic in your home. Designer labels You know the pangs of jealousy you get when you see celebrities and their seemingly unlimited wardrobes, the outfits that never seem to be worn more than once? While us regular folk may be a little more practical than wearing our clothing just once, we finally have access to an ever rotating wardrobe and with it, high quality designer wear for a fraction of the price.

N

Back L-R: Amanda Wallace, Ronnie Dent, Sitting: Hayley Budd

“WITH ABOUT 100 NEW ITEMS IN OUR STORE EVERY DAY, YOU CAN COME IN REGULARLY AND THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING NEW.”

estled comfortably in the historic retail development, The Tannery, Recycle Boutique is exactly what the name suggests – a boutique recycled shopping store. But what the name doesn't allude to is that Recycle Boutique is packed with gorgeous, high quality designer clothing without the designer price tags. “We have a lot of regulars who come in every week,” owner Hayley Budd explains. “With about 100 new items in our store every day, you can come in regularly and there will always be something new. Better yet, if you sell through us, your wardrobe is always rotating.” While living in Wellington, Hayley had been a regular at her local branch of the nationwide franchise. When she moved to Christchurch after the earthquake to be closer to family, she realised there was nowhere to sell her preloved clothing. “It was the perfect opportunity to start something new here,” Hayley says. “The city was changing, there was a lot of new energy h ere and after the earthquakes people became conscious about not holding onto the old anymore.”

It was a gamble. A city known as conservative in nature, Christchurch isn't a traditional op-shopping city and Hayley had no idea how it would go. “We couldn't have hoped for a better start,” she says. “We've had a fantastic year.” The opportunity to get designer items for a small fraction of their retail price resonated with the city and Recycle Boutique has taken off in a big way. Wheth er it's university students wanting to keep up with the latest trends, parents under pressure to keep their teens in the latest gear, or parents themselves wanting to stay stylish. Even labelled menswear, which Hayley says is difficult to get, is a hit and they are on the lookout for more male suppliers. “If you're wanting to step out in Karen Walker or Stolen Girlfriends Club, some of these items can cost half a pay check. We get great condition labelled clothing for a fraction of the price.” Carrie had been frequenting the Tannery for her daily coffee and waited eagerly for the Recycle Boutique to open. “For decades I have only bought second hand clothing for personal, ethical reasons,” she says.

She enjoys the hunt of looking through someone else's 'let-go's' to find a treasure that is well selected, reasonable priced and already loved. “I believe I am not alone in this kind of pursuit, as there seems to be an innate longing in all beings to find a cherished one-of-a-kind bargain! “Recycling our no longer needed or wanted or liked clothing for someone else to have,

while making a little dosh to boot, works for all!” Recycle Boutique will consider your gear, sort through it, take what they don't accept to charity and pay you for what they do. “I have been shopping at the Recycle Boutique for as long as they have been open, and I bring clothing there often to sell and recycle. It is a great service in this aspect, and to me, whom needed to rebuild a professional wardrobe this year, I have found

everything I could have ever needed, from the odd to the elegant, from the trendy to the traditional, in that magic little shop. “What a smart, thoughtful business idea/model. The curious cat I AM by Andrea Moore has a fresh, fun and full-ofattitude mantra that shapes each new collection – and the AW15 Curious Cat story is no exception.

A

s with all I Am collections, Curious Cat features animal iconography in a big way. This time, the star of the show is a highly stylised, origami-inspired cat. Prowling his way throughout the collection, the cat takes centre stage in a futuristic silver motif that features on a preppy lurex trench coat and matching zipped mini. I Am's Curious Cat also demands attention as he boldly sits on a cotton puffer jacket and a tailored pant, but he is harder to spot as he chases birds across a selection of casual t-shirts. Elsewhere, he peeks into frame on geometric prints that reference his sharp, angular features - imbuing dresses and knitwear with a dash of feline sass. Floral dresses and shirts in complimentary colour-ways soften the edges of the collection, as does a relaxed raglan-sleeve wool-blend coat available in Sapphire or Red-Hot. Led by emerging designer Jacenta Kwan and guided by the experienced hand of Andrea Moore, the I Am design team continues to discover and refine its aesthetic with each new season. The Curious Cat collection is a fantastic example of this design evolution as it successfully tiptoes a fine line between night and day, fun and formal. In many ways I Am is a reflection of the creative and talented young women it targets. It has a vibrant energy, a life philosophy of mixing work with plenty of play.

n its seventh year, the DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship is designed to identify New Zealand's hottest up-and-coming fashion exporters and assist them in achieving international growth. The scholarship paves the way for Georgia Alice to make a huge impact on the global fashion scene. Georgia Alice Currie was born in Christchurch and after a brief stint at ballet school in Sydney, made the move to fashion through a development programme at Australian department sto re David Jones. After returning to Christchurch to train in fashion at Christchurch Polytechnic, she eventually set up her own label in Auckland in 2012. Currie has seen her business go from strength to strength, including features in Australian Vogue, Australian Elle, Russh, Oyster and on international blog The Man Repeller. Currie's business strategy has a strong focus on online, including targeting bloggers and implementing an Instagram campaign with fashion photo grapher Steve Tilley that featured polaroid shots of her garments. She also worked with international model Valentina Ruby on her third collection, Battenburg. Now in her fifth season, Currie boasts 24 stockists worldwide, including New York and LA.

fast trajectory AFTER RETURNING TO CHRISTCHURCH TO TRAIN IN FASHION AT CHRISTCHURCH POLYTECHNIC, SHE EVENTUALLY SET UP HER OWN LABEL IN AUCKLAND IN 2012. NOW IN HER FIFTH SEASON, CURRIE BOASTS 24 STOCKISTS WORLDWIDE, INCLUDING NEW YORK AND LA. Georgia Currie says: “I am beyond thrilled to have been awarded the DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship. Georgia Alice currently has stockists throughout Australasia and North America, and over the next 12 months with the amazing additional support from DHL, Georgia Alice will be able to confidently continue to export and maintain growth internationally. “I am overwhelmed that my brand has been selected and so excited for the future. A huge thank you to the judges who saw the potential in my brand, and of course to every girl out there wearing Georgia Alice.” The scholarship has become an early identifier of young talent in New Zealand, with previous winners such as Stolen Girlfriends Club, Lonely Hearts, twentysevennames and I Love Ugly going on to significant international recognition. In a first for the competition, inaugural winner Dan Gosling, director and part owner of Stolen Girlfriends Club, returned to the DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship as a judge. Gosling joined an esteemed panel that includes John Kelly, MAX Fashions CEO, Paul Blomfield, chairman at FINZ and Megan Wildermoth, fashion and textiles specialist at DHL. Megan Wildermoth says: “Georgia Alice is on a fast trajectory and she needs support at this crucial point to help catapult her on to an international level. She has a strategy and a vision, and the reception she's getting is hugely exciting.” Dan Gosling says: “The momentum Georgia's receiving reminds me of what it was like at the beginning with Stolen Girlfriends Club. She's definitely at the tipping point in terms of her brand. But at the heart of it her collections are strong – you can tell if a garment is a Georgia Alice piece. I could see her being the next Karen Walker.”

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY KEY BLACK'S COLLECTIONS ARE NOT BULK PRODUCED WITH LIMITED NUMBERS MADE IN ALL FASHION PIECES.

The key to your wardrobe Key Black has unlocked the future to fashion for all women sizes 10 -24. The store, located in Cashmere on Colombo Street, Christchurch, marries the visually dynamic with the practical - its speciality is creating key basics for everyday wear that transcend day to after five wear. Designed by New Zealand women for New Zealand women, Key Black is already attracting style seekers in their droves.

I

n store, compelling pops of colour are emblematic of a brand that appreciates its loyal following want and deserve options so their wardrobe can truly reflect their own personality and style. Owner and operator, style magnate Rachelle Varnham, strategically created Key Black as a way to help women individualise themselves through their fashion choices, no matter their size or taste. “My inspiration is definitely my clients – I have listened to and understand what they are wanting in their wardrobes – comfort, shape and style. Our fashion labels are home grown, including the Key Black collection, The Carpenters Daughter and Miranda P. Key Black's collections are not bulk produced with limited numbers made in all fashion pieces. “The label El dia que te quieras meaning the

day that you love yourself is brought in from Uruguay designed by Kiwi woman Virginia Baltar. This designer creates styles that flatter the curves.” In addition to her own innate design talents, Rachelle recently secured an experienced designer, Julie Fotuhetule, who has had years of design experience. Having hand picked her

team of stylists, Rachelle knows that when customers come into her store, they are looked after by a team that is not only educated and experienced in what they do, but incredibly passionate and dedicated too. “Our team will help to create a vision, and style our customers in a relaxed and private atmosphere. We invite our customers to enjoy coffee in the courtyard while our team get a changing room ready for them. Group styling sessions are available and free, and best done towards the end of the week. “The only danger in this store is loving too much! My aim is to keep the store fresh and have new styles arriving regularly. We have the key to your wardrobe.” For more information call in to Key Black at 27a Colombo Street, phone (03) 337 1495 or see them on facebook.

Learning difficulties linked to vision Does your child or a child you know have learning difficulties? Have you had their eyes tested? Vision is now believed to be the missing link in learning/reading/writing disorders and dyslexia.

I

n 1996, Geraint Griffiths, the UK founder of the Association of Sportvision and Schoolvision Practitioners, made this link between how visual/binocular instabilities affect learning in school children. His findings came from research he and his colleagues did in assessing the connection between vision and sporting performance. They then went on to make the connection between visual instabilities and learning/dyslexia in children. It is now understood that the dominant eye's role is critical in achieving fluent reading and comprehension. The methodologies and techniques of assessing how a child sees provide the fundamental missing link in the role vision plays in the learning process. The assessment required to detect this goes beyond conventional optometry and prescribing spectacles to just 'see better'. In school children, a specialist Anstice Schoolvision assessment can uncover binocular instabilities that contribute towards dysfunctional learning and dyslexia in its many forms. Once identified, the best treatment can

then be formulated. On the surface, a child with learning difficulties may appear to see well; however, the visual system could be functioning on over-drive to achieve this. An over-worked visual system can cause learning fatigue, comprehension difficulties and slow or stagnant reading behaviour. Without a specialist visual assessment, it will be difficult for the child or parent to know if their vision is preventing them from learning well. Therefore, if a child is having difficulties at school, although they appear to 'see well', it is recommended that they have an Anstice

CANTERBURY BRIDAL How to get the best wedding By Jeanette Shinn

A

fter you have booked the facility it is time to get down to the serious business of finding the right wedding photographer for your wedding celebration. This can be tricky because: Ÿ You need to find a wedding photographer whose style agrees with your taste Ÿ You need a wedding photographer whose body of work is up to your standards; and Ÿ You need a wedding photographer whose personality clicks with both of you. This last trait is quite possibly the most important of the three, although you don't want to sacrifice any of them if you can help it, in choosing a wedding photographer. Why? Because it is the wedding photographer's job to set everyone, and you especially, at ease so that the wedding pictures you get reflect the people you love and not a caricature of them. And this is best achieved by using a wedding photographer that you feel at ease with. True, there is no guarantee that everyone will feel at ease with the wedding photographer that you choose which is why it is so important for you to choose one that at least you will be comfortable with. Before we move on, however, be aware that some of the bigger photography studios have a small number of representatives for you to meet with and sell you their wedding photography packages. The problem is that once your wedding party is booked they will give the assignment to

Photography

someone else, even a freelance wedding photographer that you have never met before. Protect yourself by either using an individual wedding photographer, or a wedding photography company that will guarantee the particular individual that will photograph your wedding. Likewise, be sure when choosing your wedding photographer that you see several entire wedding's worth of wedding photography that he (or she) personally shot. Anyone can shoot hundreds of pictures and have a few that have turned out great, especially in particularly photogenic situations like weddings tend to be.

It takes a real skilled individual though to turn out an entire wedding's worth of great wedding photography. Finally, regardless of how sharp and how much of a people person the wedding photographer is there is no way that they are going to know who your great uncle Charlie is, or where to look for him if he disappears. So save your wedding photographer (and yourself) time and grief by choosing someone within your wedding party (someone with a strong personality) who knows everyone involved, to be the wedding photographer's contact person.

Just minutes away from the stressful traffic snarls and construction zones of the city is an oasis of country calm, the perfect setting for that special wedding, function or conference.

Oasis of country calm… T

he Vineyard @ Rossendale is a purpose built venue situated in the midst of the Rossendale Vineyard's Pinot Noir grapes and surrounded by stately trees, mature gardens, and immaculate lawns. In winter there is even a view to the Southern Alps. Whatever the season it is the perfect setting for a wedding ceremony, photographs and reception, a sophisticated cocktail party or a successful conference. “We take people out of the city into a totally relaxed environment,” says venue manager, wedding and function coordinator Graham Jones. He and his dedicated and professional team, who range from qualified chefs to a dedicated gardener, are all focused on one thing – making any function whatever the size, simply perfect. “We love what we do,” says Graham who is also a marriage celebrant and has been in the wedding venue management business for over 20 years. “It's our venue and location, our garden, our staff - many of whom have been with us in excess of eight years - and our food that make The Vineyard so special,” he says. The elegant building, which can hold up to 200, is cleverly designed as a “blank canvas”, allowing people to add their own touches and decor so that every wedding is unique. With French doors to the gardens, a dance floor, a private lounge (which has doubled as a photo booth and a casino), a beautiful bridal retreat

The bridal room can also double as a small private conference room if necessary. Congratulations Beautifulat hair every age your engaged!

Many mature clients go to V for Hair and Beauty Merivale after being dissatisfied with cuts and styles elsewhere, their team reports. The friendly team of stylists there have over 60 years’ combined experience, and the maturity and expertise to look after senior clients.

I

t is important to have a style that suits your hair, face shape and most importantly, lifestyle. If you choose to let the greys come in naturally, your haircut needs to create shape and make a statement. There are lots of ways to add colour and minimise re-growth, such as foils with highlights and low lights. Your skin tone naturally changes as you age, so make sure to adjust your hair colour accordingly with softer shades. Perms don’t need to be taboo! A good perm or style support can add manageability and volume to hair. Clients love having hair and beauty therapy all under one roof. Whether it’s for a relaxing facial, pedicure or an eyebrow tidy up, you will walk away looking and feeling fabulous from head to toe. At V for Hair and Beauty, you can escape the chaos and relax in a haven of pampering; freshly brewed coffee, herbal teas, chocolates and friendly staff. They say, “We don’t just do hair... we do beautiful at every age.” Find them upstairs in Merivale Mall or online at www.vforhair.co.nz.

Congratulations, you're engaged and looking forward to your dream wedding. To make it everything you desire you need to be focussed and organised. Here are some tips to ensure your planning goes smoothly…

F

irst off, don't rush. Enjoy being engaged, it's a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends and contemplate a wonderful future together. The first step of your wedding planning will be to set the date. Once this is done you will need to decide on the tone of your event. Will it be a formal wedding, a casual affair or a theme wedding? This is also the time to decide whether your wedding will be religious or secular, and what the wedding will “feel” like. Setting a budget is always a big consideration. Talk to each of your parents and ask them if they'd like to contribute to your wedding, and either how much they'd like to give you, or what specific things they would like to pay for. Your attendants at the wedding will be helpful on the day and leading up to the day, so choose them carefully, ask them in person if at all possible, and discuss the responsibilities involved. Venues get booked out well in advance so begin looking for a venue you love early in the piece and you are more likely to get the date, time and cost that you've planned for. Consider hiring a wedding planner or consultant. If you are a busy person, or just want some guidance, professionals can be invaluable in putting together your ideal day and t hey can often save you money. You'll find free checklists and planners on the internet and these are helpful for staying on track with your list of to do's. You'll no doubt find yourself gathering information from many sources such as magazines, brochures, swatches and printouts so obtain a ring binder or wedding book so you know where everything is. Once you've got these basics underway you can begin with the fun stuff – dresses, suits, flowers, rings, food, photos, cake, mus ic and the many other details that you'll find on your checklist.

Suit trends for the modern groom & groomsmen The bride might still be the fashion highlight of a wedding day, but never has more emphasis been placed on the attire of the groom and his groomsmen.

Design a

winter wedding Winter wedding themes include the magical wonder of snow and glittering ice crystals. The cool, snowy weather during this wondrous time of year is the basis for sparkling winter theme weddings.

A

benefit of winter weddings can be the availability of venues and possibly costs. Because this time of year is frequently less busy, often a couple can get great deals on their wedding arrangements. Couples who want to book their wedding within a few months also choose winter weddings because it is easier to get the date you want. The colour scheme for a winter wedding can be breathtaking. It can include a variety of pretty flowers in wintry colours including red and white roses, poinsettias, holly sprigs, and ornamental berries.

C

olombus and Ware are at the forefront of personalised men's fashion and the relaxed, knowledgeable team feel privileged to be a part of a couple's special day. The extensive selection of quality, sophisticated hire suits includes a new stunning navy blue tailored suit. With fits for whipper-snappers to the more rotund fellas, blokes can experience the luxury of a crafted garment with all the trimmings, without blowing the budget. For a more individual look, a popular option is the purchase of attire for all the groomsmen with the groom gifting these to the boys. Ask about the Wedding Party package deals.

WINTER WEDDINGS ARE JUST AS WARM AND WONDERFUL AS ANY OTHER SEASON. White, glacier blue, red, burgundy, deep blue, navy and silver are all beautifully used in winter theme weddings. Glittering crystal jewellery on the bride and wedding party and dazzling chandeliers all add to the winter wonderland atmosphere. An ice sculpture as a focal point when you enter your wedding reception will make a wonderful statement. The bride can wear an elegant, white satin gown with cap sleeves or longer, mesh sleeves. Brides can even choose the strapless gown they want with a warm soft wrap. Fake fur, real fur and cashmere are all lovely options for a wrap to keep the bride warm as she enters and exits her wedding. Matching wraps for the bridal party are attractive and practical. Have your reception in a warm hotel or historic manor with glamorous chandeliers, dark panelling and a fireplace to create a rustic, wintry environment. Crystallised gowns and ice jewellery for the bride and wedding party bring bling to this event. These weddings are just as warm and wonderful as any other season. 52 January 29, 2015 Metropol

he two-day 'Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration' is now in its 11th year, and is featuring up to 40 Central Otago winemakers and 200 other wine enthusiasts. It's a unique occasion where guests share experiences and philosophies with local winemakers, taste the wines, visit their vineyards and sample the very best cuisine the area has to offer. The celebration takes place from January 29 to 31, 2015 and guests will enjoy visiting some of Central Otago's most picturesque local wineries including Rippon, Prophets Rock, Carrick, Aurum, and Mount Edward. For the 'foodies' amongst them, there'll be exquisite dining options available from the

likes of Josh Emett's Rata, Skyline restaurant, Blue Kanu, Simon Gault's Jervois Steak House and Botswana Butchery. Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration event manager Vikki Kircher welcomed wine fans to register for what she described as a “one-ofa-kind” event. “It's wonderful to see so many enthusiasts signing up for the celebration, which is becoming more and more popular each year. It's a unique opportunity and an unforgettable experience which brings together people from all different walks of life to share their common love and joy of Pinot Noir,” she said. The Central Otago Pinot Celebration has been running since 2000, when a group of committed Central Otago producers identified

an opportunity to provide a world-class event in New Zealand. It's held every two years, with every third year coinciding with the Pinot Noir NZ Celebration in Wellington. One guest who has attended every celebration since it started is Dr Jeff Bragman from San Carlos, near San Francisco in the USA. Dr Bragman said it was “the people and the wine” that made him travel all those miles 'across the pond' to New Zealand. “The wines from this region have become world-class over the years and I always look forward to tasting new vintages and discovering new properties,” he said. espite being established in 1965, the Continental story has only just begun and, the catering, event hire, event and venue management company has, quite simply, stood the test of time. Fifty years later, the business continues to grow, with a new North Canterbury home bringing key business operations under one roof, and the development of a gluten and allergy free production facility in Rangiora with online ordering capabilities. Previously spread across multiple sites throughout the city, Continental Catering has recently settled its business operations into a multimillion dollar, 8,000 square metre facility and destination café in the Southbrook business park at 6 Kingsford Smith Drive, which will be officially opened in February, sales and marketing manager Georgina Torrington says. “By bringing our production kitchen onto the new site, we've been able to renovate the kitchen from our previous premises, enabling us to develop a purpose-built gluten and allergy free facility,” she says. For food to be completely gluten and allergy free, it needs to be manufactured in exclusively gluten-free premises, which ensures there is no possibility of contamination. chef

Mary's Mixologist Scottie Ronalds shares the secret behind making a sensational Strawberry Margarita… Frozen Margaritas are super popular during summer and a great way to cool down on these hot sunny days! The great part is they are easy to make and you can use your choice of any fresh ingredients - frozen berries, kiwifruit or even mango, or simply take our word for it and try the below!

Glassware Margaritas are served in varying glassware, I think they are best served in a margarita glass but alternatively use a martini glass or even a tumbler, any of which are available from Total Food Equipment.

How to make a Strawberry Margarita...

Recipe courtesy of Jo Wilcox, Best Foods Ambassador.

Fresh salmon

45 ml Tequila 15 ml Triple Sec 30 ml Sugar syrup 15 ml lime juice 4 large strawberries Methodology 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Add all the ingredients to a blender and add a scoop of ice 3. Blend till slushy 4. Pour the mixture into the prepared glassware and garnish with a fresh strawberry. Note: Don't add too much ice, there's nothing worse than a watery margarita. For an extra twist add 15 ml of cherry liqueur it partners fabulously with strawberries and raspberries.

Bloody Mary's is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary's Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

with Asian flavours

Courtesy of Best Foods' The best little Cookbook is this delicious salmon recipe that is perfect for a summer lunch…

Best Lite Miso Salmon with Asian Style Slaw & Toasted Sesame Serves 4 4 x 180g portions of fresh salmon (you could use thick white fish if you prefer) 4 Tbsp miso soup paste ½ C Best Foods™ Lite Mayonnaise 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest ¾ C panko breadcrumbs Salad ½ red cabbage, finely sliced 1 carrot, peeled and finely sliced 1 yellow capsicum, deseeded and sliced into strips ½ C sango sprouts 1 C mesclun salad mix 2 Tbsp coriander and extra for garnish Dressing ¼ C Best Foods Lite Mayonnaise 1 lime, juice and zest 1 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2-3 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (you can use a mixture of black and natural seeds)

Method Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. Line a shallow roasting tray with cooking paper. In a small bowl combine miso, mayonnaise and lemon zest. Arrange salmon portions in the tray and spread a generous layer of miso mayonnaise on each. Sprinkle over panko crumbs. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes depending on thickness of the salmon (the flesh should just start to flake in the centre when tested with a fork). Rest for 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile combine the sliced vegetables and sprouts in a large bowl and toss with the lime mayonnaise dressing. Arrange coleslaw on the serving plates and top each with a portion of salmon, sprinkle with sesame seeds and garnish with coriander and a lime wedge. For dressing, whisk together the mayonnaise, lime juice and zest, sweet chilli and warm water to make a thin creamy dressing. Metropol January 29, 2015 59

While many of us were lounging round the pool during the summer holidays, two of Lincoln's locals filled the festive season with activities of a more unusual kind. And, although it seems Lincoln University student Morgan Shields got the short end of the stick when the Department of Ecology was handing out summer scholar assignments, he assures us collecting weta droppings was an “awesome” experience.

M

organ has been sharing the university's portable lab at the West Coast community of Punakaiki with fellow summer school student Paige Lawson, whose assignment is a little cuter – counting penguins. Morgan – an undergraduate Entomology student – is carrying out research into the role of insects such as dung beetles, tree weta and ants in seed dispersal. He is marking native dung beetles with fluorescent dye to observe their dispersal behaviour in the lab and their natural environment. Using an ultraviolet lamp, he can observe the marked beetle's walkabouts at night and the fluorescent trail they leave behind. He wants to find out how far they travel to find dung, whether it contains native seeds, and if so, which plant species. He is also delving into how much dung they can recycle and how deep they bury it. “It's exciting being on the forefront of current research,” Morgan explains. “Field work means going to remote or very neat locations and seeing and doing some pretty awesome things such as climbing mountains in the search for weevils, determining giant weta populations on a predator free island, or hanging out in the

Paige is trying to estimate the size of the little blue penguin population in the reserve, locate their nests, and assess their reproductive success, using artificial nest boxes specifically designed to receive a camera with the aim of filming penguin activities without disturbing the birds or damaging their nest.

Update your home It's amazing how quickly our homes can start to look dated. Even if they were once the height of fashion, they can easily start to feel stuck in the past, and for many people it is enough to make them consider moving, unaware that it is simply the fact that things feel stale that is giving them such wanderlust.

T

here is plenty that can be done, easily and cheaply, to make a house feel more modern though. A change of paint is always a great way to start. Finding out the colours that are currently in vogue is a great way to instantly transform a room. On top of that, interesting and modern artwork and contemporary ornaments will also instantly bring a room up to date. Home lighting is also a surprisingly datespecific kind of thing. Older light fittings will instantly date any room, and changing glaring halogens to more subtle accent lighting can instantly change the feel of a room without anything else being needed. Altering home

lighting is also easy to research and cheap to achieve, making it one of the perfect places to start if a house is starting to feel jaded. The more you can spend on lighting, the better. Wooden floors are also a great way to say modern. On top of this, utilising a wooden floor gives you great scope to include underfloor heating, an investment that will almost certainly pay for itself in terms of how much money can be saved on energy bills. If you can, make as much space as possible, knocking down walls to create more space if it is appropriate. Space and lighting combined will make even the dullest room feel fresh and new.

Professionals offer total trade package Painting is something of a miraculous concept, with the ability to rapidly transform both interior and exterior spaces. iPaint was established to fill a need for a professional painting service in the greater Christchurch district, under the directorship of Peter Polansky.

Y

et the company very quickly recognised its strengths in project management, renovation and building and, with the civil engineering expertise of partner Ben Stephenson, expanded into the construction field under the iConstruct banner. With a strong focus on residential earthquake repairs, iConstruct has carried out full repairs on about 350 homes to date, offering a complete management and oversight service from a project’s start to its completion. They can call on around 60 skilled and proven tradesmen in all areas of construction, painting and finishing to deliver what they promise in a timely, professional manner, on budget and to clients' satisfaction. “Our biggest strength is the way we project manage our contracts,” Peter says.

For a stylish NEW KITCHEN or KITCHEN FACELIFT...

“WE HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED AND DETAILED PROCESSES THAT ARE FOLLOWED SO THAT NO ASPECT OF A JOB IS OVERLOOKED AND NEGLECTED.”

“We have clearly defined and detailed processes that are followed by our workers so that no aspect of a job is overlooked and neglected. We have extremely high standards for the work that we do. A fter all, reputation is everything.” In an industry with something of a reputation for unreliability and quality control issues, iConstruct removes the hassle of organising tradespeople and contractors, ensuring clients can rest easy knowing their work is being carried out professionally to a high standard. “We enjoy working with people and strive to produce high quality work. Our clients are extremely important to us and our goal is for them to find working with us pleas urable and

hassle-free. At the end of a repair job we like to present our clients with a basket of lovely goodies to welcome them back to their homes.” Peter's vision is for the company to diversify further into new builds. “We want to be even more involved in the rebuild of the city and there is so much opportunity in both the residential and commercial sectors. We see a real chance now too for more energyefficient, cost-effective and sustainable buildings than have been the standard in New Zealand up until now. “It's a natural progression for us.” iConstruct is located at 1/81 Magdala Place, Middleton, phone 0800 127 0813 or visit www.iconstruct.net.nz.

Following the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, we have repaired nearly 500 homes, helping Christchurch residents get on with their lives.

Opting out with iconstruct was the best decision we ever made! From the moment we contacted Ben to get repairs underway it was a stress-free and simple process. We were always well informed along the way and the fact that we were given a timeline before the work started was invaluable, especially when trying to organise our temporary accommodation. Nothing was a bother for Ben and the team, they were always very easy to contact and we even had some additional work done on our house at the same time. The process was far simpler than we could have imagined and the end result was fantastic.

Bear in mind houses surrounded by too many trees the whole to be. or evergreens can be gloomy to live in. The requisite inside a house is sunlight and plenty of it. As trees are chosen because of certain good points, shrubs should be also. In a clump I would plant some that bloom early, some that bloom late, some for the beauty of their autumn foliage, some for the colour of their bark and others for the fruit. Certain shrubs are good to use for hedge purposes. A hedge is prettier, usually, than a fence. Landscape gardening may follow along very formal lines or along informal lines. The first would have straight paths, straight rows in stiff beds, everything, as the name tells, perfectly formal. The other method is, of course, the exact opposite. There are danger points in each. The formal arrangement is likely to look too stiff; the informal, too fussy, too wiggly. As far as paths go, keep this in mind, that a path should always lead somewhere. Its job is to direct one to a definite place. Now, straight, even paths are not unpleasing if the effect is to be a formal garden. The danger in the curved path is an abrupt curve, a whirligig effect. It is far better for you to stick to straight paths unless you can make a really beautiful curve.

Outdoor rooms an inspiring success Mention barbecue in Christchurch and you're sure to summon up a beastly easterly. Or possibly a gale force nor'wester. The challenge in our fair city is to create a garden area protected from blustery gales, both cold and hot, where you can relax al fresco no matter what the weather.

H

arewood couple Maurice and Jules have solved the problem, creating a couple of cunning outdoor rooms that cope with all but the very fiercest storms and which are welcoming day and night. While the rooms are cleverly designed with an eye to the weather, it is the HE GOT couple's own personal quirky magic CRACKING AND that makes their al fresco areas so IT WAS GOODBYE attractive. LAWN, HELLO It started, says builder Maurice, with the northwest CONCRETE AND BRICK facing lawn alongside the house PAVING, AND A NEW where a fence and gate blocked SIX FOOT HIGH FENCE. off a barbecue dining area. It A LUSH 30SQM PRIVATE, was a bland, not very userSHELTERED OUTDOOR friendly spot.

ROOM WAS BORN.

He got cracking and it was goodbye lawn, hello concrete and brick paving, and a new six foot high fence. A lush 30sq m private, sheltered outdoor room was born. Then the magic began. A tiny waterfall water feature, brushwood fencing, and about two dozen lush and lovely pungas and ferns of varying heights and varieties and voila – the couple had a secluded 'West Coast' haven. Two shade cloth sails give protection from rain, sun, and frost (the pungas love them). Add candles, quirky ceramics, flickering lights among the greenery, and a selection of cute little critters known as “God's little creatures” and you have the perfect place for a champagne breakfast, leisurely lunch, afternoon drinkies or a late night barbecue. Outdoor lighting and a

gas heater take care of chilly evenings. The West Coast was such a success that this clever couple decided to “encroach on the lawn even more”. With an opening in the brushwood fence, a new wall and a new boundary fence, a second similar sized room was created. Even more sheltered, this area has a more summery feel. Maurice has made clever, built in against-the-wall seating, (with blue lights that flicker underneath) and a seriously useful table. White camellias and buxus hedging give a Mediterranean feel and an eclectic (and frequently changing) selection of candles and ornaments, funky cushions, a hanging seat, and shade umbrella add to the ambience. Thanks to clever design and an enviable amount of creativity, al fresco entertaining is almost always a possibility at this abode!

Gi s of beauty Valentine's Day means many different things to many different people, but at its heart, it is defined by love, passion, sensuality, generosity and intimacy.

I

FOR LOVERS AND FRIENDS ON VALENTINE'S DAY, BRIDGET HAS GIFTS THAT ARE NOT ONLY PRACTICAL PERFECTION, BUT ALSO PIECES THAT WILL TUG ON THE HEARTSTRINGS TOO

t is, therefore, a fortunate stroke of lover's luck, that nestled gracefully on the boardwalk at The Tannery in Christchurch, is Bridget Ellery Design Studio – a fusion of sweet, sultry and soulful. Better still, it is the very beautiful answer to men's and women's gift buying conundrums for Valentine's Day 2015. If it's possible to imagine a shop full of exquisite fineries, fittings, wares and wonders for the skin and soul, then you're half way to discovering what lies in store. It is a haven of femininity – every bit as inviting and visually delightful as its owner Bridget Ellery intends it to be. A loyalist to sustainabili ty, supporting the local economy, bespoke goods and utilising organic materials throughout her ranges where possible, Bridget offers a little bit of beauty to everyone who comes through her doors. For lovers and friends on Valentine's Day, Bridget has gifts that are not only practical perfection, but also pieces that will tug on the heartstrings too – only fitting given the occasion. A gifted creator, Bridget promises to also help breathe life into a desired concept so it ca n become a tangible creation; she works on a two to six week turnaround timeframe for custom designs. One new addition to her gorgeous range, something Bridget is quite understandably very

excited about, has an artistic twist. “We will be offering photoshoots to capture the inner beauty of women – these are designed to be pieces of art and are printed onto sheer fabric to embody the soft, sensuous nature and feeling of being a woman. “The photographic look is designed to be soulf ul and passionate – spiritually empowering for women to see themselves as authentically beautiful inside and out, which they are, as opposed to what the fashion industry portrays in a sometimes unhealthy way.”

for Valentine's Day Bridget Ellery

In addition, Bridget's range of bespoke, handmade perfumes that romance the senses, are hand blended and crafted from pure and organic essential oils, which makes for an indulgent and considerate gift that is quintessentially New Zealand. “We have an extensive and thoughtful range for women and men including 'Beauty', which is very feminine, 'Wahine' which captures exotic, sensual island beauty, and 'Tane' which is suitable for men and women thanks to its deep, sensual and earthy tones.” Bridget Ellery also offers stunning handmade jewelry - a precious keepsake for any delighted recipient, bespoke clothing and nightwear in lush fabrics, and natural candles adorned with beautiful imagery to provide a backdrop for a woman's sanctuary space – her home or bedroom – when she wants to relax, revitalise, meditate and reflect, or for a romantic evening. This space can also be decorated with Bridget's stunning wallpapers with oriental vibes and wall decals that can easily but compellingly

transform an environment. “I'm all about creating a nurturing and divine space, particularly for women, although men very much respect and relate to this atmospheric approach too, although they may not always verbalise it. It's about inner tranquility, and our living spaces play a very important role in how we feel about ourselves.” Greatly inspired by the beauty and aesthetics of the 1920s, Bridget says she pursues freedom and inspiration for women when crafting and selecting for her store, and that these are the sentiments expressed by her pieces. “There was something very sacred and spiritual about this time in history when women began to feel free to be themselves and there was an inherent appreciation of beauty that women and men shared together.” This appreciation of beauty is still alive and very much present in Bridget's store, which has its arms wide open to men and women this Valentine's Day with Bridget's very own expertise on hand to support in the selection of gifts for loved ones.

GREATLY INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTY AND AESTHETICS OF THE 1920S, BRIDGET SAYS SHE PURSUES FREEDOM AND INSPIRATION FOR WOMEN WHEN CRAFTING AND SELECTING FOR HER STORE, AND THAT THESE ARE THE SENTIMENTS EXPRESSED BY HER PIECES.

A world of aesthetic options It would be fair to say that seasoned and savvy interior designer Sally Ibbetson, whose business name pays homage to her own, has a certain 'je ne sais quoi' about her.

A

definite fan of wanderlust, Sally has been on quite the journey in recent years, but Cantabrian lovers of finesse, fabulous fittings and finery will be pleased to know that Sally is back on home soil and she's brought her sense of adventure with her. Formerly one of the owners of Sandalwood Design for more than 20 years, Sally's experience is robust, compelling and, quite frankly, speaks for itself. “I was living overseas for a couple of years and it is really fantastic to be home now and back working in the industry I love so much.” A true people person with a natural affinity for leadership, Sally prides herself, and rightly so, on offering a unique, innovative experience devoid of aesthetic clichés – in other words, she thinks outside the square. “I love dealing with people. To me, working with a house is like a jigsaw puzzle – I love finding out what works and fits and watching it all come together.” Providing a complete interior design service, from helping clients with their colours right through to the cherry on the top detail – hanging pictures and arranging ornaments – Sally is passionate about what she does. “My job is as the facilitator – I do like to help my clients push the boundaries a little when they want to, and do suggest things they perhaps wouldn't necessarily consider. This approach can produce some great results and it is an exciting thing to be able to actively explore different options.”

Sally Ibbetson

A TRUE PEOPLE PERSON WITH A NATURAL AFFINITY FOR LEADERSHIP, SALLY PRIDES HERSELF, AND RIGHTLY SO, ON OFFERING A UNIQUE, INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCE DEVOID OF AESTHETIC CLICHÉS – IN OTHER WORDS, SHE THINKS OUTSIDE THE SQUARE.

While Sally is most certainly a fan of strategic experimentation, she's also an expert in mastering the balance between providing guidance and taking an all ears approach. “I fully appreciate that the design of a home is not about me – I like to build on and nurture my clients' ideas to help them achieve something that meets all their expectations, and hopefully exceeds them!” Sally is currently working synergistically with Design Made and Mainland Design Centre. Matchmaking – how to ďŹ nd the right interior designer A number of great philosophers over the years have espoused the concept that your thoughts have the power to dictate your physical reality. Profound though this may be, when it comes to home decorating, it's about as helpful as it is effective.

W

hen it comes to your home and how you decorate it, it's all about personality and the great news is, personality doesn't cost a fortune to demonstrate. On the other hand, getting it wrong can be costly, which is where the professionals come in because, let's face it, a few nuggets of professional wisdom can work wonders. Before contacting your professional interior designer or decorator, get an idea of the project's scope. Are you doing the whole house, or just one room? What's your budget? What are your timeframes? How will the room be utilised and how does it need to fit into the overall house? Remember, no information is too much information for your designer, so keep magazines and notes of what you like and even what you don't like. The first step to finding the right professional for you is through word of mouth. Talk to family and friends about their experiences, especially when the resulting look is similar to what you're after. However, a great interior designer will want to put their clients' needs, budget and the style of home into consideration, so never judge them on one job alone. Some designers 'specialise' in a particular look or style while a good designer will want to clue in to your style, even if you don't quite know how to express it.

A web search can bring up a list of local designers, enabling you to read up on their online profiles, even better is when you can view their previous projects and testimonials. When you've narrowed down your list, there're some more questions you need to be ticking off. Is the designer formally trained? Although formal qualifications aren't a sure fire promise of quality, they are certainly a mark of the dedication they have invested into their career. Are they part of a p rofessional body and do they offer any relevant guarantees? Does their previous experience align with the project you have in mind? How many years' experience do they have behind them? An experienced designer should be able to supply referees you can contact. You also need to be able to clarify terms of engagement and fees. How does the fee structure work? Is the company transparent in its pricing? Many of these questions should be answered online and this will enable you to

SOME DESIGNERS 'SPECIALISE' IN A PARTICULAR LOOK OR STYLE WHILE A GOOD DESIGNER WILL WANT TO CLUE IN TO YOUR STYLE, EVEN IF YOU DON'T QUITE KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS IT. na rrow your list even further. Once you have whittled this down to a manageable number, then it's time to start organising face to face meetings where you can get a feel for who the designers are and how you will work together. Most importantly, trust your instincts. The designer and client relationship can be an enduring one. Selecting the right designer for you needs to be a considered process. You will have your ups and downs, so you will need to communicate comfortably and work well with each other.

Changes to the Building Code helps consumers The recently passed Building (Residential Consumer Rights and Remedies) Regulations 2014 will provide consumers with access to more effective dispute resolution services.

F

airWay Resolution Limited fully supports the changes to the Building Act that came into force on 1 January 2015, which will see better contractual relationships between building contractors and their customers. FairWay's chief executive, Greg Pollock says the changes to the Act will provide consumers with greater rights under the regulation and that is a good thing for consumers. “FairWay has been working with the building industry to resolve emerging issues with consumers before they escalate into costly and intractable disputes.” The growth of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation and facilitation, reflects the worldwide trend towards early intervention to avoid the time and expense involved in litigation, not to mention the stress and anxiety associated with having a dispute. Pollock says FairWay is excited to be providing this service that will help individuals and businesses resolve their dispute as early as possible, and ultimately without needing to go to Court.

THE GROWTH OF ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION, SUCH AS MEDIATION AND FACILITATION, REFLECTS THE WORLDWIDE TREND TOWARDS EARLY INTERVENTION TO AVOID THE TIME AND EXPENSE INVOLVED IN LITIGATION, NOT TO MENTION THE STRESS AND ANXIETY ASSOCIATED WITH HAVING A DISPUTE.

FairWay has an established panel of highly qualified and experienced dispute resolution practitioners who can assist either consumers, builders or other parties involved in a building dispute. FairWay is a professional services company that specialises in conflict management helping prevent conflict, through to resolving conflict using alternative dispute resolution techniques. FairWay currently handles around 12,000 disputes per year, which are spread across work for Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), Telecommunications Dispute Resolution scheme (TDR), the Financial Dispute Resolution Scheme (FDRS) and Family Dispute Resolution (FDR). It is an independent Crown-owned company,

which provides specialist conflict management and dispute resolution services between organisations and the people with whom they come into contact. FairWay provides comprehensive conflict management and dispute resolution services across both the public and private sectors, handling issues and disputes of all kinds and all levels of complexity; including medical, insurance, financial services, telecommunications, real estate, family and local government. AUTO NEWS SPECIAL REVIEWS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS

By Ben Selby

New supercar a stunner Ford has stunned everyone at the recent Detroit Autoshow with the unveiling of a new GT Supercar.

W

hile the GT bears some resemblance to the Ferrari's ballistic LaFerrari, such as the doors, taillight cluster and countless ducts and scoops, the design mostly seems to exude blue collar muscle, a clear throw back to the previous GT and the original Le Mans winning GT40. New 20inch alloys house four carbon ceramic brakes and a rear diffuser and adjustable rear wing complete the ensemble. The body itself will be made predominantly of carbon fibre with lashings of aluminium, housing both the engine and pushrod suspension. Ford also claim the new GT will have one of the best power to weight ratios of any production car.

Images: NetCarShow.com

Expecting V8 grunt? Not this time. A mid-mounted 3.5-litre twinturbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine is rumoured to produce in excess of 430kW. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will provide the get up and go. No word yet on performance figures, though Ford themselves say the new GT will have more than enough poke while still providing new levels of efficiency. Inside, the two-seat GT offers what Ford calls a "purposeful" interior, which can be accessed via the scissor like doors. The previous GT began production back in 2004 and the new car will be produced in limited numbers from late next year, marking the 50th anniversary of Ford's infamous 1-2-3 finish with the original GT40 at Le Mans in 1966. While the new car will be sold globally, the chance of seeing one next to the new Mustang in NZ Ford showrooms in the future is pretty slim.

Impressive year for Maserati By Ben Selby

It's official. Kiwis love Maserati more than ever. Aside from celebrating the company's 100th anniversary in 2014, New Zealand sales of the cars adorned by the trident emblem increased by 400 per cent last year, compared with 2013.

Glen Sealey, General Manager of Maserati in Australia and New Zealand.

“ A

ccording to the latest official MIA sales figures, a record 70 new Maseratis found homes around New Zealand. This made it greater than the combined total of all cars sold over the previous three years. Maserati New Zealand kicked things off in 2014 with the national release of an all-new luxury Quattroporte. Aside from revised styling and dynamics, the big news with buyers was the choice of three different engine options, including diesel, petrol and high performance versions. Last year also saw the resurrection of the Maserati Ghibli. A name synonymous with the brand, the all-new Ghibli sports saloon joined the new Quattroporte in Maserati showrooms in Auckland and Christchurch. Powered by V6 petrol or diesel engines, the

The new models and the Maserati's centenary are just part of what made 2014 an extraordinary year for Maserati.

Ghibli was Maserati's first attempt to break into a segment dominated by BMW, Audi and Mercedes. “The new models and the Maserati's centenary are just part of what made 2014 an extraordinary year for Maserati,” says Glen Sealey, General Manager of Maserati in Australia and New Zealand. “We have also had to ensure that all the additional clients we have welcomed to Maserati ownership in 2014 enjoyed the same high levels of customer service as existing Maserati drivers and this lead to the opening of the new Maserati dedicated dealership, Maserati Auckland.” Maserati's dealership in Christchurch will also receive added investment during the post-earthquake rebuild.

AUTO PLUS We all have milestone moments which become forever etched in our minds. It could be your first beer, first kiss or your first speeding ticket, it's something that stays with you. Much like when I was offered a genuine Holden Torana SLR 5000 for a weekend. Talk about a no brainer.

Old school V8 thunder T

he Torana SLR 5000 was not only one of Holden's mightiest V8 pocket rockets, but was also driven by the late great Peter Brock to his second Bathurst victory in 1975. This 1974 Canterbury owned example has Bathurst kudos of its own, for it was one of 30 to be paraded around the mountain as part of its launch in 1974.

YOU HEAR THE V8 THUNDER BUILDING AND FEEL THE VIBRATIONS OF POWER AND TORQUE PINNING YOU BACK IN THE SEAT. DROP IT DOWN FROM FOURTH TO THIRD AND ANY MOTORWAY LANE HOGGER CAN BE DEALT WITH.

Whereas the first hot Torana before it, the LC and LJ XU1, was a compact coupe with relatively clean lines, the LH SL/R 5000 features a square jawed, no-nonsense face with flares and big bumpers. A large rear spoiler with SL/R insignia dominates the boot lid while twin exhaust pipes poke out from underneath. Inside, the dashboard, instrument cluster and switches are all factory fresh, with the gargantuan three spoke steering wheel immediately grabbing your attention. The interior trim in this SL/R has been professionally reupholstered in leather with SL/R 5000 badges embossed in the front seats. Under the bonnet sits Holden's tough as nails 308ci small block V8 mated to a four speed manual box. While you could also have your Torana with a variety of inline sixes, the 5.0-litre 308 V8 179kW - was the only option for the SL/R 5000, hence the model designation. Turn key and in an instant, eight lazy cylinders rumble into life. Put your foot to the floor and what happens next is an all-out assault on your senses. You hear the V8 thunder building and feel the vibrations of power and torque pinning you back in the seat. Drop it down from fourth to third and any motorway lane hogger can be dealt with. Being a product of seventies non power assisted machinery, you work up more of a sweat working the wheel than an hour in the gym. Drum brakes all round mean you have to book your stop well in advance of pressing the pedal.

AUTO PLUS By Ben Selby

THE TORANA SLR 5000 WAS NOT ONLY ONE OF HOLDEN'S MIGHTIEST V8 POCKET ROCKETS, BUT WAS ALSO DRIVEN BY THE LATE GREAT PETER BROCK TO HIS SECOND BATHURST VICTORY IN 1975.

Getting the hang of things however does not take long and in the bends, the SL/R is surprisingly capable. After extended and zealous use of your right foot, watching the fuel needle drop becomes a common sight. Who cares though, when you have the soundtrack of old school V8 thunder at your disposal. The spoils of glory from last year's rather unusual Bathurst 1000 went to Ford Performance Racing, making it back to back wins for the blue oval. However, sampling a legendary piece of Aussie and Bathurst history such as the SLR 5000 is nothing short of epic.

EVOLOCITY

A hit with E electric vehicle enthusiasts

volocity, sponsored by Orion, featured standing sprints (drags) and lap sprints for electric go karts, motor bikes and cars. It also pitted electric vehicles versus combustion vehicles. It even featured a two lap race for modified electric bikes. And, fifteen high school teams competed in a number of challenges, using vehicles they had built during the year. Rob McEwen, organiser of EVolocity, says that the event has got the electric vehicle community buzzing, and that it has also had an impact on die hard petrol heads. “I got a call following the event from a Christchurch Ferrari club member who said they were not only blown away with the performance of the Tesla S against the Ferrari, but that they'd taken an opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf at the event and couldn't believe its acceleration off the mark,” says McEwen. EVolocity had three primary goals: Ÿ Stimulate innovation in the electric vehicle sector in NZ Ÿ Demonstrate the performance capabilities of electric vehicles Ÿ Encourage young people to pursue studies in science, technology and engineering McEwen says that a number of those who competed are already talking about innovations to improve their performance next year. And, in the case of one of the high school teams, they're talking about building a real electric drag car next year, sourcing mentorship from John Wayland, owner of White Zombie, the fastest electric drag car in the world. “That's exactly the sort of outcome we were looking for,” says McEwen.

New Zealand's first ever day of electric motorsport took place last month at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna Christchurch.
